Great Idea
Really like this - hope it comes to reality
LRS
This is exactly what I was hoping to find when browsing under identify plants. Submitting a photo for an expert to identify would be better for me. Is there such a site as that?
been done.
I forgot where. I think it was Japan or something. It's been done before. You payed a very very tiny fee, and they had small soundproof rooms where you can scream your heart out.

Did you know what also exists?... There's some places where you can pay to destroy the hell out of room, including its furniture and absolutely everything. I forgot if it was expensive or not, but I'm guessing it was.
Bad idea.
I quote...
"instead of having the child waste it all on a Lexus SUV and some oversized McMansion."

So what happens if your son/daughter does not become wealthy? I'll tell you what... he/she is screwed.
What if he/she ends up working at burger king?
You did not state any exceptions, so poor people would be forced to lose money.
student nursing
i think that some of these articles need to be more in depth because as a student nurse i am using this for research and sometimes this just isnt enough information for a certain topic. this is how many web sites are now though.
like it
I think that in this day and age it is important to recognise the benefit of stress relief. The fact this idea may have been tried in Japan shows it's feasible but to introduce it in the UK might help to relieve some of the "uptightedness" that we are branded with from birth. This could even be developed further with some kind of scale system to register how much stress you have "relieved" measured by volume and length of scream.
Great idea but...
I think whsmiths might be a bit pissed off...
Nice but...
This is a nice idea, I like the permanancy aspect but in some ways is this not what post office boxes are for? maybe I'm missing the point?
A touch of reality
This does seem slightly ridiculous. Surely of more benefit to the country would be an upper house comprised of top-prize winners of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. Contentious bills that are continually blocked and obstructed, such as fox-hunting, could then be expediently resolved in a 'fastest finger first' vote.
Good idea, but...
The electricity generated by human powered machines is very small. It would be difficult to power even the readout gadgets on the machines this way.
a couple issues
Bloomington, Indiana, USA has a pay by use and curbside recycling system. Unintended consequences are:
1) An increase in recyclable handling costs beyond the income from the pay as you go.
2) Decrease in trash to the area landfill which caused a financial crisis for the landfill leading to increased trash from out of area to cover the shortfall.
3) there is so much recyclable material that there is no market for its disposal.
diversity in schools
Surely you have sadly misunderstood the private school system - people send their children there to keep diversity at bay. Parents wishing to introduce their children to diversity could always just send them to state schools.
weekly reader
I seem to recall something along these lines when I was in grade school (in the U.S.). It was called Weekly Reader. I think it was published by the Scholastic Textbook Corporation, and it basically had all of the elements of your above idea. The thing was, it was something schools subscribed to, not students. When I was in grade school and middle school, these things were not of interest to me, no matter the flashy pictures. Certainly the magazine was more interesting than class, but it wasn't interesting enough to get me involved. I think it is a good idea, but kids can tell when they are being preached at, even if a picture of a youth protest includes a skateboard.
Recording companies vs. Ticketmaster
your last comment, that the loss in ticket sales would be made up for in album sales, doesn't work. The people selling CDs are not the same people that own arenas. And, the artists themselves have always made much more money from touring than from CD sales.
emphasize voluntary
I like the idea, as long as the voluntary nature is included. I am all for guilting companies into responsibility; not so much for legistlating it. Trouble is, few companies would volunteer in the first place. If you got enough of them to go for it (the logistics of tracking this stuff down would be pretty wild) many others would follow. But a lot of people would still shop at walmart anyway.
RE: Bill Gates' Road Ahead
I think all the ideas that will be created and implemented are awesome! I would love to find out the outcome of each innovation from this article.

Oh' and I don't agree to the bias of gender. Women do have knowledge of computers and programs. I for one enjoy working on computers and finding out new innovations.

Thanks.

Waste Water re-use
This is a good solution but the initial cost of building treatment plants is so high that most of the developing countries do not take up this measure to conserve water
Eliminating ‘widows’ from webpage printouts
When editing a Word document, for example, you can use "page layout view", which shows all the margins etc., or "Normal" view, which still puts a dotted line to indicate the position of the page breaks. All that is needed is a similar facility in Explorer, Netscape, etc, which shows the page breaks. The user could then easily decide whether the last page (or sometimes the first page!) was superfluous.
Illegal cycling
Encouraging children to engage in illegal activity of any kind is irresponsible and will probably lead to very serious crime later.

Violating the law is not the answer.

If she wants to use a bike
She should ride on the road and walk in pedestrian areas.

Not so original...?
You are of course right... this is exactly what needs to happen... and I think is happening or at least being attempted by the likes of Itunes, DX3 etc etc... I think the fundamental problem is tthat music as an artform has been somehow de-valued and therefore suffers from a certain consumer apathy, whether this id down to the rise of P2P applications or the plethora of poor quality material released by the major labels... well I leave you all to decide...
Kidscard
it's an ok idea, and maybe one who's time has come...but i question whether this solution is, in fact, merely symptomatic of a larger problem not being addressed by our schools (the proliferation of bullying)
library wireless access
canada is currently installing a wireless system throughout its library system...this idea is a must
think jet
while maybe not solving any problems, the idea of a computer terminal linked to every other seat on the plane (the way i read george's idea) is a brillant way to create an onboard "chat", and to make the experience of flying much more rewarding
Customizable Horn Sounds
You could sell horn sounds on the internet much like mobile phone ringtones or even record your own.

A truly great idea and it could put a stop to road rage all together as every driver would laugh at other horn tones.
Review of Longing to Live...Learning to Die.
Ms. Wienrich has nicely captured the flavor of the book. The updated version published by iUniverse has
the typos corrected. (Well, at least most of them.)

excellent idea
I would say this idea should happen more than once a year and be compulsory in all election campaigns.
love the idea!
hey! absolutely love the idea! though i wonder if people would ever let it happen, the work freaks that they are!
Computer jobs for autistics

social responsability
How does refusing to listen to junior students and forbidding their independent thought help teach them they are worthwhile, valued and part of society? If our democracy can be threatened by our youngest members of society exercising their free will by a protest then our democracy has very little foundation and will easily find something else to destroy it. It is exercising of our rights that ensure we have them and this is a lesson worth teaching.
tobacco as fuel
the amount of biomass with 400 tons/hectare seems unbelievably high. The palm-tree gives only 10.000 litres of palkm-oil per hectare, which is already enormous. Please your explanations on this?
Joseph Meyer
Ridiculous
I applaud your intentions, but the idea doesn't begin to address the NEED for parking in cities. Are we to hope that by transforming all parking lots to parks people will immediately begin to use public transport? What will those people unfamiliar with public transport do?
agree, great idea
I like the idea. How do you keep people's standards of living at least equivalent, though? Most people need to work 40 or more hours a week to stay afloat.
Voluntary Green Tax
Voluntary green tax doesn't appeal to me, people who don't care about the environment won't pay it. Better to set prices a bit higher, then they all have to pay. Tom Foxe
excellent idea
I just came across this website the other day. I've always thought something along these lines should exist. Glad to have found you guys. I expect great things to come from the Global Ideas Bank.
fantastic
This could change the world.
Prudery
I would need to know what culture in the Caribbean is less prudish than any other. The US Virgins are certainly not amongst these. These most-prudish of islands, recently closing their naturist beaches, have the worst rape, child-abuse, spousal-battering, and murder rates in the United States. They also have the lowest SATs! They are the unbuckled buckle of the Bible Belt. They fit perfectly into your theory -- with which generally I am obliged to agree though might I suggest that social policies delaying sexual consent for males are about as antisocial and costly as social policies can be. What more stupid policy than having sexually frustrated teenaged boys on the streets? I believe your theory shows up in similar form in UnNatural Selection.
feasibility?
This idea scares the hell out of me! Imagine jumping from one semi to another at high speed on an L.A. freeway! "Hurry, mommy, jump! The interchange is coming!" This is an exaggeration obviously, but any attempt to move load and unload on the go is a scary proposition, especially if this is to take place on a freeway.
but why?
There's gotta be an easier way.
this is only the beginning...
Great plan. While we're at it, let us all volunteer for rectal probes, because really, nudity does not reduce the highly adaptable terrorist's ability to sneak aboard weapons of mass destruction. Or, let's require that all passengers cut their own hands off before boarding a plane; 'cause hey--you can't hijack and fly a plane without hands! No, wait. Even better-- Let's just ground all forms of transportation for all time, and be safe and sound at home, hiding under our beds, for the rest of our lives! Call me ignorant, but I can't tolerate this fear.
Inmates trained as fire fighters as part of rehabilitation
This SWIFT program could be ideal for Australia -considering the amount of devastating bushfires that occur. This is a good opportunity for non-violent offenders to be introduced back into the commmunity.
Wow!
I'm from Canada and I think this is very inspiring. What an amazing story! Canada, like the US, is very car-sick. Everyone is addicted to their cars and it must stop. I can't wait to cycle through some of these cities in Europe and see the progress they have made. I am going to pass this article on to my city council. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Shadow books
This would be a good idea for the Guinness Book of Records too. There must be endless records that could be made up - they can't all fit into one book.
reusing waste
I think it is very important that we find ways to reuse our waste. An idea we are playing with in Scotland is to make greenhouses out of old plastic soft drink bottles. If you cut the bottom of them, they will sit on top of one another. By making a suitable frame, they can be held in place and they can be use to help the school (or whoever) to grow food. I have also seen them used to make wind breaks and bus shelthers.
recycling credits
I read a book recently called "The Future of Money"by Bernard Lietaer ISBN 0-7126-8399-2. In it he tals about a city in Brazil called Curitiba where they tried something like this. The garbage trucks could not access parts of the city, so people who brought out a bag of sorted waste were given some kind of credit which they could use on public transport. As the buses etc were already running only half full, the extra cost to the city of another passenger is almost 0. The citizen got free transport and a cleaner city, and the city got cleaner and achieved a higher rate of recycling very cheaply. I imagine it also generated a good feeling for all concerned. Could this idea of recycling credits not cover a whole range of possible payback methods, each depending on local/national conditions?
Curitiba
I first read about this place in a book called "The Future of Money" by Bernard Lietaer. Well worth a read. I believe that this idea can be replicated all over the world. If it can work in the slums of Brazil, then it can work in the slums of Scotland. Or anywhere else for that matter.
Multi story car park
VERY GOOD IDEA! And how do you think it would work to locate sea animal habitats by posting signs with large images of cars - Saturn, Toyota, Prius, Chrysler, VW, etc?

Actually I think the first idea is the best, but we might test it out by asking people to vote.
Pop charts for different age groups
This is an interesting idea, it would be good to see what different age groups are purchasing and actually the type of artists they are supporting. Hopefully it would help some record companies take their focus away from one demographic group.
a good death
the author is quite accurate in his observations in that preparing to provide for survivors is "good death" it is also only part of a good death, the having one's house in order is major part of a good death: that house encompases spiritual, physical and emotional
Who would win?
I like it, but who would win?! Would you subtract the negative voters from the positive...? Would this elect the least disliked candidate?

Michael Tomlinson
i'd go the other way
and include in the definition of terrorism (which i think is 'acts of terror against civilians not carried out by nations') to include the sort of thing the USA and the UK are currently perpetrating in Iraq.
agree
a simple, but noneless valid, solution to a much more complicated issue. This idea takes the issue from a different perspective, the inconvienence factor, which may add reason for a person already hesitant to vote, due to personal politcal views, to just not vote at all.
Awesome!
I too am from Canada, Toronto specifically and I truly hope we can introduce this idea to this great city. I think people in Canada are open to a greener, environmentally-responsible substitutes and life changes. I am already part of the 'bike-nation'!

freedom of parenting
there are many reasons for wanting to educate your children through homeschool and one of the BIG advantages is that there is no standardized education system for them. Not everybody wants to teach the same subjects or lessons and if all you want to give to your children is the same education they get in schools then send them to school. either you have the necessary skills and resources to do the job you want doing or you dont. it is the parents job to sort it out, schools are avaliable if you can't do it your self, but thats no reason that EVERY child should be treated the same. since the dawn of man there have been over 700billion people and no two are the same, home education is one way of encouraging that uniquness, standardizing it will take that away.
It is not an either/or argument
In this world we tend to see things as a duality between either public ownership or private ownership, and becasue one particular for of common ownership is not working, does not necessarily mean the other is appropriate.

By accomodating privatisation we allow the debate to wander into dangerous territory. What we need is public organisations with the strength and direction of private bodies. As you yourself mention - there has been an increase in development. And that will be just the tip of the wedge. Effectively, land has still been given over for the purpose of profit, even if people do have access rights, that land now serves capital.

The alternative - campaign for a moratorium on any profit based activity that threatens nature. Don't climb down to a lesser position of acceptance or thinking nothing else can be done. Look at the Zapitistas. Take heart.
This method works!
I've actually started using this method in order to get to the nearest petrol station every time the LOW FUEL warning comes on. It works so well I sometimes go past a few stations as it introduces an element of thrill into this usually boring activity.
In-city parking
How about a compromise? Yes we need far more public transport, and yes, most car parks are horrible tarmac deserts. But we won't get miracles overnight. Instead of tearing up all the tarmac and planting picnic areas, approx. one third of each area could be given over to good landscaping (the new park and ride sites in Winchester are an excellent example of what a car park can look like). That way, wildlife can use the flowerbeds, trees etc., the trees make the air cleaner, there can be shady benches for sitting (if not acres of green for sprawling) and there's still enough parking space to make the move to sustainable transport seem less threatening.
transmitter alarms for battered women
This is a good /wonderful ideal. The elderly lady that has fallen and can not get up needs help and so do Battered Women. Often the phone is taken away and access to outside help is a challenge. I often wonder why my neighbors who hear the violence does not seek to obtain help. Why is it not obvious that the abuser is in a critical crisis and some intervention is neded. The abuse person is at that time praying for some one to intervene. Many time situations can be cooled if the perpetrator knew he was not going to get away with the abuse( verbal or physical). If you can fashion a transmitter that can signal for help when an explosive situation is in effect it would surley save many women from abuse. Perhaps a watch or a braclet. I have no idea how effective pepper spray is or brand which is the most effective, Just some thing to use to get the abuser off youlong enough to aloww saniyt to prevail. This transmitter must be inconspicuous. The abuser is very observant to every thing the victim does. Defusing situation prior to them becoming explosive is most effective. To scream and holler at a person because you can is and should be considered a crime. Ineffective communication skills to a spouse or person is a shame. Why would someone just scream and holler at a person. No one is allowed to go to any place and distrub the peace. Why should an abuser be allowed to consistenly disturb the peace in any community. I am in favor of your device. Most calls the police will get. Should be handled as a call for help. The prolonged dismissal and looking the other way at abusers only allow them to continueshould stop. A disturbed mind should be tended to. Do not hesitate to send me onetransmitter. Prepare the local police. Prepare the prision community. It is time the abuser realize he can not continue to get away with making someones life a living hell.
Huh?
What does this mean? Are you just saying people should be nicer to gay people, and children should be taught in schools to be nicer to gay people? Or is there some deeper meaning mixed up in all that socio-babble?
library wireless card rental
What about how to help pay for it to start happening? The library could have "check out" rentable wireless cards for a minimal fee.
Internet voting
Yeah, I agree on the internet voting, and maybe the apathy does go deeper than it just being a weekday..... by the way, online voting is, needless to say, an idea in the GIB....do a search above.
Details, schmetails
Surely the principle (that buying goods locally where possible is better for the environment) is one we can agree with? A law might not work, but maybe more incentives....
not good for automatics
sorry, should have made it clear that the method only works with a manual gearbox.
Re: ridiculous
'What would people unfamiliar with public transport do' - catch a bus maybe. Surely if you drive you see and understand what busses do? Isn't there something about bus lanes in the driving test?
Why not have plot shares in a park
You could buy your own park plot - just like an allotment - every plot owner paying towards the park upkeep.
spend 1/3 less on fuel driving
I beleivwe that driving your car in neutral is illegal in that you do not have control over your vehicle
Why stop at food and housing?
In Patrick Tilley's "Amtrack Wars" books, the post-apocalyptic populace theorises that roads, whose remnants still exist, were formed from the accumulated trails of giant snails, used as transport and beasts of burden by their pre-apocalyptic ancestors.
If we're going for GM supersnails, I think tarmac secretions would be a splendid addition to their usefulness.
Hitchiking references
I've hitchiked quite a bit. These sorts of "ride boards" are already in place - perhaps some way could be crafted for people to get "references" or "track record" from previous experiences - as E-bay has of its sellers.
Great Idea
Ofcourse, this is fantastic idea. we can even contact to electricity company and tell them to provide this type of facility. They may be charged little cost for that but it would be worthful. TARANG ARDESHNA
Bigness Complex
Great ides, but I think the limit on mergers should be higher than $1 billion. Maybe something around $10 Billion would be more feasible. In today's economy $1 billion isn't a whole lot.

Another idea would be a requirement for corporations to register for a renewable license (for say 5 years) to do business in any given country. License agreements could include requirements for a certain percentage of the corporations gross profits to be used for local community support and enhancement (with no overt acknowledgment of corporate sponsorship). Other requirements could include fealty to and respect for the Constitution and laws of a given country as a condition for doing business there.

Finally, corporations need to be stripped of their status as "citizens", especially in the US. Corporations are not people, they are made up of people, and they were originally created to serve the people, not the other way around.
numbers
Maybe instead of criticizing, people like justice@hand could offer an alternatve to using numbers for an ID system that would preserve one's privacy.

firedancer
Absolutely
I support this idea 100%. Of course, ideas like this will be bashed by the so-called conservative religious folk with the usual diatribes. One suggestion would be to expand on the program by offering a secular, non-sectarian meditation class to prisoners, and workshops in interpersonal relations, as well as literacy classes.
Excellend idea
Why not make it a national idea forum? It could be monitored by neutral parties to weed out inflamatory and trivial posts, then the results of public evaluation of leading ideas can be periodically released to the media.
Moladi?
What is moladi? How does it work? How much does it cost? Where do you get it?
Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the reply. That is exactly what I hope it would be--a national debate forum. However, I would like this to be so big that it would probably not be feasible to have neutral third party monitors. However I believe we could create a survival-of-the-fittest system that naturally weeds out inflammatory and trivial posts.
For instance, before you are able to post an idea you may have to evaluate two other ideas. This would promote enough evaluation to "naturally" weed out inflammatory or trivial post. Or if you are going to disagree with an idea, you may have to evaluate the best two reasons to agree with that idea. Of course for this to be possible people we would have people classify their comment either a "reason to agree" or "disagree" with that idea. With this classification two columns could be created beneath each idea with the best reasons to agree or disagree with an idea at the top of their respective list.
This would be beneficial because it would force an individual to do more evaluations, It would also force them to confront the best ideas that appose them. For instance, if you wanted to post a reason to disagree with a particular idea, you would have to evaluate the validity of the top ideas from the list of reasons to agree with that idea.
This system would also make the website easier to navigate by putting the best ideas at the top. This would eliminate the need to "weed out" trivial post. They would just go to the bottom of the list--they would just get worse real estate in our survival of the fittest system.
However, I would not completely abandon the conversation thread concept. It is tedious because you have to see each conversation in all of its gory details. This is annoying because there are an infinite possible conversations that could be had about one topic. It is also annoying because each new post has the possibility of bringing up a new topic. It is also tedious because even if you do have procedures to weed out offensive or trivial post, once your to an idea, there is not system of organizing, evaluating, or putting the best subsequent post to the top--they only make sense in a chronologic (post, 1st response, 2nd response, 3rd response, …) order. With all of these negatives of an online-"thread-discussion board" at some point (after an idea has been thoroughly investigated with all of the reasons to agree and disagree listed) each of these post deserve to be investigated. True this does lead away from the original post, but at some point the topic of discussion can change in a threadlike way to each of the other post. For this to take place I would simple re-use the existing system. So once you click on a response, you could see all of the reasons to agree or disagree with it. These of course would be organized into columns that are organized according to the online community's collective opinion of each idea.
a start
The occupation switch would never work, especially for technical jobs and jobs that require a lot of specialized knowledge. In addition to swapping roles at home and outide (other than work), men and women should swap clothes for the day too. Then men might get an idea of why so many women hate high heels, or what it's like to wear a skirt on a windy day. And handling children for a whole day....
amount of land?
can you guarentee my land is not part of the sea? as the population increases do we get less than one acre? if my land is on mars am i guarenteed oxygen when i get there?
hemp paper
hemp is a better source for making paper. for every 1 acre of hemp you need 4 acres of trees to make pulp paper. and it takes 3 months for the hemp to grow where as it takes 20 years for the trees to grow so in 20 years one acre of hemp makes as much paper as 320 acres of trees. if thats not convincing by itself try this: hemp makes better quality paper that lasts longer. in canvas all th great artists have been painting on hemp, thats why their paintings are still around and not faded.
double the pay
keep the standard of living the same by in effect double your pay - or keep it the same but half the work. think about this: before WW2 a man would go out and earn a family income while his wife stayed home and looked after the domestic stuff, since we now live in a more equal world it makes sense to split both the work and domestic stuff - both need to be done. But what has happened is that slowly man's wage deecreased while womens increased until we both get the same but both do full time work - only the business's benefit society hits a decline. money as a mees rather than as an end would just meen business's must except they cant make as much profit as they have been used to. it's all abpout quality of life
F.R.O.G.
Would he have a mate that pointed out all the benefits of drugs too? after all its the one sidedness of the argument that gets kids questioning it in the first place. understanding the high as well as the low gets the message across: "JUST SAY KNOW"
I agree
there has to be an easier way!
anonymous ????
what about postal votes? no scan for them. my right to privacy - i find the voter registration number a breach of my right to anonaymousness. and there is a 0.1% share rate for retina scans - it was in new scientist earlier this year - so in the UK that meens 60,000 people share my retina scan if some of them dont vote i could vote several times.
better stuff to do
can't we go the other way and allow people to take drugs to enhance their sport? we could have drug free events, drug taker events and combined
or body armour!
if we cant give them all bionic limbs or cybernetic implants that send nano-probes to fix the broken bones.
This website could be a start.
I believe this website could eventualy be turned into my dream merger of a debate forum and a stock exchange. I don't have the ability to do it myself, and so I thought I would just try and explain it.
David's Sling
David's Sling is a very good book about this idea.
DARPA
Robert Hanson of DARPA fame is trying to develop this idea. However instead of betting on what will happen, I think people should bet on what SHOULD happen. That way if you have stock in something and more people buy stock in the same idea, then that stock's value will go up. However this stock will be a belief. It will be weather something is right or wrong. It won't just be weather people think something will happen or not, it will be weather something should happen or not. That way if someone makes a really good argument for something, its stocks should go up. The website won't be a typical investing website evaluating an idea stock's performance. It will be an idea website, evaluating the reasons to agree or disagree with that idea.
This idea didn't come from no where
I came up with this idea as a motivation to get people to care what they believe. It would give people a reward for believing things that can be backed up with logical evidence. Necesity is the mother of invention. We need to live in a society where people are rational.
Re
I don't see enough of a problem with the current system (parent gives cash, child spends it) for everyone to adopt a new one. I think most kids would be mature enough to handle having a few dollars in their pockets, and take responsibility of said lucre anyway. And if extortion an issue, in all likelihood the perpetrator would be reported using the 'silent-witness' programs that have been springing up in public schools of late.
Re
Luckily for you, it is. Sex Ed seems to be pretty well-rounded these days, albeit slanted (most of them have undertones of DON'T HAVE SEX, DON'T HAVE SEX in them). Besides, these days I doubt there are many American kids over the age of eight who haven't been clued into the reproductive process yet. Praise be unto MTV.
Re
I don't know the ratio of deaf people to hearing, but I'm sure it's not great enough to make this necessary in our schools. You might as well teach kids German to improve communication between an American and every German they happen upon (not many). Or, better yet, set up a basic language and make it a mandatory course for the proposed years.

Any way you cut it, there will always be someone who will not be able to communicate with another, due to differences in language, intelligence, ability, or whatnot. I don't see this going away anytime soon.
Re
Talk about hitting the nail on the head. The only situation I can think of where childlessness should be frowned on would be if our species was in danger of dying out. And with population as it is, I doubt that'll come along anytime in the near future.
Re
I'm with scienceman on this one. A policy such as this is far more befitting a dictatorship than a democracy. And taking a look at history, being told what to think doesn't seem to go down well with most people. Restrictions of this sort could result in far more dangerous effects than a few kids going home with the idea that they can contribute to the world.
Yes!
I also have enjoyed eating a major meal in the middle of the day rather than after sundown.
Now, how can we possibly get our twistedly hurried society to change their ways?
A skin of morning glories
Why is it that inexpensive, low tech ideas are not usually exploited? I would think of spraying on a seed that might grow shady leaves rather than some sort of altered molecule. "Air plants" already exist that need no soil.
Small buildings cost energy also. Here's something any inventive person who lives in a house where there are hot summers can do to save energy...
I knew a house in Lawrence, Kansas USA where, every spring, the owner would string up a thiry foot lattice for growing a whole wall of morning glories to shade the sunniest side of his house. I heard that he saved over 80% of his air conditioning bills during the hot summers. He paid for this cooling usually during the time before the flowers had not yet climbed up to work as intended. I've done this myself to shade a hot porch in summer - and it works great! Simple but elegant - and it would work for a larger building but it would take sun.
Happening soon....
I think the UK government are introducing this, although whether it works (and how much it costs) are fairly scary prospects....
Sign of the future
There's quite a lot going on in terms of phone credit and the like, where you can pay for stuff via your phone. But I like this: a whole new kind of phone banking.....
Reminders
Store loyalty cards also know what you buy when. So your scanner (wireless internet based)with your loyalty card could remind you to buy tea or salt based upon your previous purchase history.
Localideasbank?
Would this be localideasbank?
I did a project on this...
Yes there is a scheme under way to do this and it is *expected* to be launched in 2005. In particular it will deal with electronic prescriptions and repeat prescriptions. Whether we see it in 2005 will only be known in time!!!
Schools Should be...
Schools should be an educational recource for the whole community. Parents should be able to use the gymnsasium, weight rooms, and other school property. Of course a schedule would have to be worked out.
DUI laws
Laws should guarantee a horrible consequence for DUI.I had to drive some drunk folks home once who wouldn't even let me take their car back so I had to walk back. The shuttle is good but kids should be persuaded to think before they leave home. Auburn
Norfolk unemployed investment club
Norfolk unemployed could pay say £5 a week to be part of a Norfolk investment club. The money could be invested as the club decides - could be in shares, loans, gifts, or any other idea.
Block captains: extending democracy down into the community
Overall I like this idea but I don't see why you need a 'block captain'. I support having an area of land for the use of a suburban block - with a recycling centre, a vege garden, a child minding centre and play area etc. I imagine the block either hiring child minders or sharing the responsibility.
you think people care?
I think you are right that we need to improve people's pride in their work. But if people cared about their descendants they would look after the environment and do many things differently. On the whole modern western people only care about their own immediate needs, so if you are going to apply a negative, punative idea like this you will have to apply it to them, not the next generation.
I like this....
Interestingly, one UK publisher has started doing P.S. editions, which have this kind of information + author interviews etc (like a DVD with extras)
Mobile
The only doubt that would be raised would be about contacting emergency services.

Would it be possible to text or 'call' mobile owners on their entry to libraries and cinemas with a request to switch off their mobile?

Awsome Perk
This would be an awesome perk. I would take a job paying a lot less if I didn't have to drive to work. We need also need to design cities, so that housing is close to places to work. Of course the cost of would have to be deducted from pay.
Websites
They could also loosely script the information from the first lesson of each course and make this information available on a website.
Linked idea
Well I suggested we should get land at birth - so we have somewhere to live. So I suppose a vote could be another birthright.
But the key is payment
To ask people to submit ideas just to keep their job would be a bad thing (c/f M&S). So people need to feel financially rewarded for an idea at work. This site is different - I think?
Those who are un-fit to run their own lives, should be the ones making decisions.
A driver must demonstrate the ability of driving because lives are at stake. You want to let someone who cannot run their own lives, affect the decisions of a country with nucler weapons? Harm is often caused by well intentioned do-gooders.
Good Suggestion
The alteration you have put forth is definitely worthy, but I have to say the only way I can see people becoming ever-aware of the faux pa of ringtones would be to force the silent function then possibly alert them to the change by a text message. Otherwise the call to ask them to silence their cell would defeat the purpose. If you could clarify the bit about emergency services, though, I might have a bit more insight into your train of thought.
Great Idea
I was pondering this the other day while reading a review in Z Magazine of David Ranney's book Global Decisions, Local Collisions which happens to be about Chicago. Corporations not owning up to local responsibility and the less-than-attractive results of government housing have been troubling to me for a while, especially with the current state of affairs at the White House (I have taken to calling it the Carlyle House as of late). I think you have a really good idea here.
Yes, what is this moladi?
I'd like to know more details as well on this intriguing substance. It must be better than wood.
Good Idea.
This solution is very promising.
I would like to ask where the financing would come from? Is it from the families that are pooling their resources? By the way, I like the designation cocooning.
Can be done
This could be done by using the Salary Sacrifice system in the UK. The employee would pay less tax, the employer less NI.
Have a look at:
www.medialens.org. It exists to reveal and chase-up biased and ignorant writing in the press, and offer a channel to do something about it by writing to journalists.

A considerable part of its ethos is to correct media comment which has been filtered by the propoganda model of communication put forward by Chomsky - that 5 factors prevent journalists writing accurately about any news.

Too much to go into here, but that site is an excellent starting point.
control of the vehicle
Legal issues are of course something to think about, although i certainly wouldn't subscribe to the view that everything that's legal must necessarily be enlightened.

I personally would take issue with the assertion that you're not in control of your vehicle (in the case of a manual) while coasting as you can still steer it, and you can still brake it (for me the two most important factors in avoiding trouble). The only aspect of which you have less control (see initial post) is the capacity to accelerate out of trouble, but how many times are you in that situation in town? For me it's safer to be travelling slower in the first place, safer to be looking further ahead, safer to not be so uptight when driving, safer not to be driving in haste, safer to be slowing down more often rather than accelerating constantly.

'Speed Kills' not lack of acceleration.

RBS Photocards
I have a Switch card with my photo on it. Not everybody looks at the picture when I'm buying things, but those who do really like the idea.
I don't think the bank offers photocards any more.
wonderful idea
Brilliant idea.

I would very much like to help.

I think what is interesting about what you are seeking to do is that you will be challenging the rights of big business to own our public spaces. In the same way as you are not actually allowed, in fact will be laughed out of the building, if you try to put any ‘political ‘ message (ie one which goes against the rights of Big Business to do as it pleases) on TV, it would be interesting to see what laws pertain when you tried to do the same with the ‘public space’ currently dominated by ad-contractors and ad-agencies.

If you have permission to do it then that is great, maybe you will start a trend and we can have ‘peoples billboards’ fighting the incredible volume of ‘egotistical consumerism is the route to happiness’ messaging.’

My own feeling has always been that when you look at billboards as they stand at the moment, we look at the messages they carry and say ‘that’s ok, they are only pointing out the advantages of their in a competitive environment’, but miss the major point that billboards are visual pollution to an extent that would not be tolerated if it were noise pollution we were talking about. And that irrespective of what is being said on the billboards, the meta-message is ‘consumerism will make you happy’. This is the real insidious perniciousness of advertising bill-boards, that you can’t even go to work in the morning without letters two feet high shouting capitalist messages as loud as they can. Better 48 sheet posters did not exist, but as they do exist (and there are too many heavyweight vested financial interests involved for them to be banned), sticking a spanner in the works has got to be a good thing.

Vis the actual messages to put on the board. I can’t immediately see any problem (although please see point 2 below). In addition to offering the space to legitimate NGO’s or the Green Party (who would probably take the space if it was available and up-and-running) you could create your own radical messages and post those up. Also, recently with improvements in printing techniques it is quite possible to create one-off 48 sheet posters (something which was previously prohibitively expensive). Design and artwork, easily done on a Mac, would, I am sure, be donated for nothing.

I say let’s take the war to them, but answer a few simple questions at the outset:

1. Can you do it? I would suspect that there is some sort of deal going between poster contractors and councils. I don’t know for sure, but why would councils allow contractors to install and profit from such visual pollution if there was not payment involved? Unlikely. Their first line of defence against your application would probably be that you have to put bill-boards up in blighted spaces – building sites, disused spaces, on arterial roads (incidentally just the place contractors want them) etc. So, if so, we’d have to find out what the current rules and agreements were. and if high costs were an issue, look for funding, perhaps through charging the radical groups posting the messages a token fee, or donations. But very interesting to find out.

2. What would be the limits of the messaging we could carry? Again I’d suspect that there would be limits to what you can say. Specifically these would probably come under the terms of ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) guidelines, although I doubt these rules would actually prohibit stating the truth (the fundamental basis of radical communication), there is the issue of libel to bear in mind.

All this is really ‘suck it and see’ territory. Where I think what you are doing would be interesting is in discovering the limits of the possible. What hurdles will ‘they’ have in your way, what limits are placed on your rights of free speech? Are commercial interests given rights over and above people’s rights to oppose lies (half-truths/quarter-truths if we’re being kind)? And what that means for society as a whole?

Royalty have rights
The British royalty are born with land rights so why not everyone else?
Ringtones
There has been an occasion when I've called the police and they've had to call me back, but on reflection I don't think there would be a problem there.

I have seen people having loud conversations oh mobiles in libraries without any embarassment.
Not necessarily?
I think for some people, the revelation of actually being listened to would be a reward in itself. I agree that if the idea saves/makes a company money, then there should be some sort of reward. But the legitimising of creativity and your ideas can be as important......
you are not alone
From 'Culture Jam' by Kalle Lasn, p89:

'Consider: When the Exxon Valdez spilled its load of oil onto the Alaskan Coast, $2billion was spent tryng to clean up and minimise the ecological damage. That money then circulated throughout the AMerican economy, resulting in a significant increase in the GDP. When the Gulf War broke out, America's GDP rose again. Money changed hands. The country became 'healthier'. Indeed, every time there's a car accident or a newly diagnosed cancer patient, whenever societal or personal catastrophes occur, the GDP goes up and the economy 'gains'.

What you write about is real, and the great thing is that you are not alone. If enough of us start making and stressing this connection and not giving up in promoting it, something must give way.

Economists are idiots, or calling scores on such a narrow fraction of the game that their opinions are redundant straight out of the gate.

The idiocy of GDP does need to be challenged, and fundamentally.
like the idea
maybe we could make it 365 days a year?
there is such a thing
...although it is still a religion.

The Bah'ai religion, from Iran, had a prophet - Bah'u'lah - in the 1900s - who was persecuted along with his followers for his beliefs.

They believed that each age has a prophet who is right for the time. Krishna, Buddha, Moses, Jesus, Muhhammud, all were the prophets of God, apposite apostles for their time, all speaking the word of God.

Thus Bah'u'lah, the prophet of the 20th century preached the message of God, but adapted to his times (and ours, more or less). Amongst other things, he believed that humanity is one tribe, one nation, and that if education can only be offered to one member of the family it should be given to the wife because she is closest to the children (quite an advanced feminist perspective for the times).

Maybe you could become a Ba'hai?

Good idea
Maybe a peer-to-peer system could be developed so we could all have fast computers - using each other's computing power. We would never have to buy another one again - we could pay for the power used - just like paying a fuel bill.
Citizencard
The citizencard organisation give away free photo ID cards to children under 18.
probably not such a good idea
I assume old people in homes are not so well - otherwise they'd be out and about. So would they have to appear in court to identify the criminal?
Duplicate ideas
Hey, erysian it seems this idea is similar to mine. Great minds think alike?

See http://www.globalideasbank.org/site/bank/idea.php?ideaId=3916
Would a graph be better?
A bit like a graph of share prices to show the trend of energy use.
G forces leaving earth?
Wouldn't the G-forces on take-off kill them?
State control?
Are you saying the 'global state' would tell us where to work - we would have no choice?

Also isn't it true that we learn most from our mistakes?
Pay for the stuff they steal
Why not simply make them pay for the items they have stolen?

I would rather have the money to buy new than my old stolen items back.
Used to have this..
..in the UK there used to be a chain of shops that had everything in big tubs with scoops, and you got a discount if you bought your own container - dirt cheap too for everything from cornflakes to flour. Great idea.
good to have the option
I often have the same problem when giving money to the homeless - that you are never sure that your money is going to support shelter for the evening (which is good) or the maintenance of a drug habit (which is unfortunate and not a good thing to support).

Sometimes you know you're actually being mugged but pass it off as an instance of 'well if they didn't need it they wouldn't be asking' or the buddhist argument that it's a revolutionary statement to give away money (even to someone who is 'undeserving').

I would like the option, vouchers from 50p to £20 would be a good idea.
A pig in every neighbourhood
Interesting, but why not turn the porker into sausages when he's on his last (hind) legs?
..and a goat
Now most of us have recycle bins we cut the grass and throw out tons of grass each week. Why not feed a goat?
...and worms
A neighbourhood worm compost bin would work well in conjunction with this idea. Worms eat practically anything , including small amounts of paper, and produce wonderfully rich compost.
Similar idea maybe?
I had a similar idea whereby if you look at someone wearing 'Good looking' glasses (with inbuilt infrared receiver) - they would register your vote for them - as good looking.

They could plug in their glasses via USB and review their admirers.
Research...
I had a bit of a google and found this: http://www.moladi.co.za/
There is a commonwealth one

Problems Directory
Good idea,John
Clarity about problems evokes solutions.I put forth that the number one problem on the planet is the absence of a unified focus that would enable us to embrace differences without conflict. The Enlightenment Project shares one.
6th ring
They should just keep it the same, adding a sixth ring would raise awareness because most dont even know what the five stand for...
Filters?
Its called a "bill of rights" and yet you're taking rights away from children? Children should have the same right to pornography as the adult population.
too true
a very arrogant attempt to regulate child behavior.
inhumane
sure, treat children like animals, they don't have deserve the right to privacy. :(

Doctor's Office Extra

Homeless for a Day
The varying factors that make homelessness and the feelings that go along with it not so easy to categorize or copy. The hard part would be to actually make these variations and feelings available for realized awareness and a more empathetic human.
pavers would need to lock
I think the inaccessibility of things as they are might be a good thing. Mainly thinking of vandals. Or these pavers would need a locking system.
good idea
You can find most drugs through search engines anyway, but I also think it would be in the interest of drug companies to sponsor the forums as well.
Against
Aren't the arguments against this very similar to those against ID cards?
Childless By Choice
Great! 'Bout time! Now I feel not so alone in the world. I am male, 43, and have never wanted children. Told my mother at age 10 when she asked about having grandchildren, that I had no idea where she would be getting them from(I'm an only child).
Good Idea
I often wonder what happens to people after they've featured in the media. It would be a good idea if you could 'subscribe' to people: they keep a www diary which you subscribe to, and you receive an email update every time they make a diary entry.
Blogs?
I guess the above is kind of like a weblog or the software the e-mails you when a webpage is amended to. So the technology's there....but is the will in our short-termist media?
redisigning transport into a sustainable form
Transport need not be what it is today. It can be profitably achieved with out exhaustive impacts in energy and resource consumption. Simply implementing a electrically driven guideway will remove accidents, congestion, emissions, and oil dependency
Why?
In our country 104, 105, 107 calls to different services.
But anyway, they call each-other if they think it is necessary.

I like the 911, or 999 idea, as it helps ME (the one in trouble) in the crucial time of finding out which number to dial.
I agree
Well,Being ill myself since long time and after using the rocking chair I agree with that idea.I hope other people can see that too.
To get a chair go to www.londonrockingchairs.co.uk
Not Bad
I hope we can have same kind of places in the UK.Some one please help people of UK.To start with have some trial chairs from www.londonrockingchairs.co.uk
Humour?
I HOPE this is supposed to be a joke? If it's a serious proposition, it sounds even worse than having CCTV on every street corner, which is bad enough.

1984 here we come.
pin numbers
I like the ideas surrounding security measures, but I use geometric patterns (currently starting in the lower left hand corner) so moving numbers would be even more confusing than the current differences between keyboard and pinpad number orders.
...and worms
I think that would be excellent. There is a space local to me where i will propose that. If they don't let me have the pig.

Watch this space
Great idea
Can see all the obvious problems about getting any government in the pocket of Big Business to go about it though. And you would have to watch that industry did not get pollution of rivers, excessive use of resources etc put down as 'reversible damage'. But then why not have two numbers for irreversible and reversible.

Either way, I'd support it.
The second tier
There could be a different number that lets you contact the second tier directly, for situations where you are not sure if you require emergency assistance or not (probably useful for the elderly).
TRDE
Yes, reversible also, great idea.
Then it comes, HOW MUCH it is reversible, but need to think on this.

Blueman is that your business or you bought a chair from them ? Great looking chair, I must say.Must be expensive!
Creating the sustainable living system
Changing culture is dangerous, I almost wish that someone could find something fundamentally wrong with my solution.

I've solved the problem of finding a reasonable path to a sustainable information age economy at least in theory. I've found I can answer everyone's questions. Not only should everyone involved do better economically we will be making history at the same time. The pilot can prove the basic concepts in 5 - 6 years but total program won't be completed for a least 10 possibly 15 years. My expertise is original analytical thinking. My particular role will be as a facilitator with a point of view outside normal culture. I also will be teaching math, science and chess.

As far a biz goes I completed a feasibility study at a high level using Industry/occupational averages, population, consumer expenditures, unpaid labor, science etc. Can't do much more that others can't do better, MBAs accountants etc.

here's a general overview.

The basic concept underlying the business is to use the capitalist system guided by current science to transform the global culture into a sustainable one through the enhancement of early childhood development. Complexity theory is the framework linking the business aspects with cultural evolution, brain development and the biosphere.

According to complexity theory, our species can achieve it's best performance by insuring that each individual has the greatest range of choices. Maximizing choices begins by insuring each child will have the emotional, social, intellectual and physical stimulus needed during the first six years of life to fully develop their potential. Next to avoid cultural damping, the children(6 to 12) will need some isolation and a supportive environment so they won't feel like freaks/geeks. The system which developed will need to accomplish these goals better and faster while making it affordable for all parents.

The business plan for a complex system is specified by initial conditions, constraints, drivers, dampers, feedback loops and goals. The basic initial conditions needed are a strongly coupled subculture, a general plan and sufficient financial resources. The other operating parameters are expressed in the mission, values and principles. The goals will be set the benchmarks for early childhood development, sustainable living and a membership of 10,000.

The real question becomes is humanity ready to go to the next stage of cultural evolution. Are there enough people who believe we need to change ourselves to fund a probe to explore cultural space?

Theory in anthropology says to evolve we need an isolated subculture which can build upon the current culture by working out innovations. In modern society it is impossible to go into isolation and bring along industry. This implies that if we don't change through a conscious effort we will keep going until the system collapses forcing us to change.

For the duel parent family we will use a different approach based on co-housing.

Economics

Initial Investment goal 1 billion - social venture capitalist

Real estate 500 million
Renovation 100 to 250 million
Recruitment first 250 members - 10k to 100k/member
Information system 100 million
Reserve remaining

Continuing Investment and/or membership fees.

minimum net/member - $5,000
typical net/member - $20,000

25 to 100 million net each year with full membership on initial site.

Total contributions( income - work expenses + unpaid labor) - Sustainable expenses(housing, food, clothing) - modern expenses( insurance, transportation, communications) > $5,000/member

The major weakness of the plan is the lack of specific details usually included in a business plan. This is due to both the sensitivity to initial conditions of complex systems and the degrees of freedom needed for cultural evolution. To lend the needed credibility to the plan a large accounting firm is needed to crunch the numbers - Earnest & Young, one of the business leaders in complexity theory. The cost of business plan writing is estimated at 20k - 100k for initial plan depending on level of detail required by investors. I plan to have as much as possible written by independents with overview and completion by E&Y .

Profit for investors

To get money from investors they need to see how they are going to make money. Once the innovations are out of the way - to live in my neighborhood will cost 10K/yr (basic living expenses) for a single mom while median income in USA is about 26K. Our median will be 40 to 50k.

What's funny here is that money is going to disappear in 30 or 40 years, as soon as everyone can produce more than they use.

After system is fully developed have basically three options for expansion, self funded, franchising or going public. Whichever way we decide to go our product will be a system that lets children skip K-12, while still developing the emotional and social development.

Losses for non investors

Here is something that's also new.

Changes will be causing shifts in behavior patterns. Those investors with us will have access to information regarding potential changes.

For example today the single family home market is driven by parents who want good schools. We will be determining which schools are going to be the best by where we open up our commercial centers. So for example in Chicago what we would be looking for is reasonable real estate in a ok neighborhood next to a good one. Within 6 years the ok school becomes the best in state.

Another example is the falling population. Everyone's business plan is based on growth. As the female population becomes more educated the fertility rate drops.

Feasibility?
Persistence of vision varies with lighting conditions, and from person to person. You can certainly make signs that change with speed, but not accurately at specific speeds.
Exaggerated claims
It's credible that such a fuel could be made and used, but the 60% drop in pollutants is very hard to believe - in real conditions. In particular, the question of CO2 pollution has been missed completely - there can be negligible improvement there.
success of contest
We are now in our third contest year. It is working quite well, children are "winning", improving self esteem and causing others to win as well..... we reached 35 participants within a neighborhood last year. Second grade period this year yielded 19

Area of upper Mississippi, Louisiana,Arkansas could be an alternate site. After ten years at either site, another Metropolis would have been formed by an industrious gathering.
Wonderful idea!
Alternate site
I believe the idea was originally offered on the front end; Alaska was turned down - what a shame! Think why was definition of culture is often too narrowly tied to it's historical environment, i.e. the failure of Vikings to adapt to Greenland
how to tell the next of kin...
Yes, let's improve this... What if you could have a company send a regular email of a your intentions to be a donor to your next of kin for you? Most people don't talk of such things ...until suddenly the relatives have to decide.

Having been a caregiver of many adults who can't accept the help they need, I'm begining to believe that it's one of the hurdles of self-respect to be a graceful, grateful & pro-active receiver of care. I'd love this to hit the media & become a fad!
How much do you do now that you learned in grade school?
Quiet time to do nothing may instill the desire. Those who are really stressed out can take a nap. Channel teen angst against habit & learn how reactions work & the "non-doing" of stillness in action by teaching Alexander Technique also?
Hey, like learning Esperanto, only more fun to "talk" in...& babies can learn it!
Think of the signing of the Native Americans so all tribes could talk. Humans already have many universal gestures; Signing expands on this. Also, easier to learn to move your hands than foreignly shape your mouth. Sadly, prejudice runs deep...

Speeding fine scheme
Brilliant! I'm not sure the insurance companies would wear it, but they should.

Or they could do it slightly differently, so that you paid an amount equivalent to the fine to the insurance company.

It could work for other traffic offences, too.
tailgating warning system
This is something I've often thought, and talked about.

What is harder to factor in is driver reaction time, and road conditions. But these days, with in-car computing power, it could be. Contact me if you want to know how. coshipi@go.com.
Bad idea...
It's telling that elderly drivers don't become as big a risk as youngsters until over 85. Let's see the whole graph in between, too?

And no consideration has been given in those stats to number of miles driven by each age group.

Too simplistic.
Re[2] ridiculous
"What would people unfamiliar with public transport do"

Learn fast? Or are car drivers too stupid to cope with public transport? I'll admit that I've seen plenty of evidence to support that theory.

Wonderful idea. But do not forget two things. The whole "thing" is about the Holy Land problem. Israelis would never say, Thanks, Canada is better let's move there.
Also, they seem to like to crisis over there as they can rule it basically.

Wouldn't this 2 or 3 tier approach be expensive? Who would collect and maintain this data on a local level?

This is correct, Matches shown in cinemas would attract more people.
Directory of people
There could also be a directory of people. If a person was associated with a particular area (Say, Ken Livingstone with London) you could search for them and find out what sites they frequent or what sites they think are relevant.
Trade High Schools
It is surely not a bad idea to make youth aware where they are standing in this matherialistic world. Especially when the focus during schooltime is the opposite. thinking in that direction is a very good idea.
Some sort of "ism"
a)The is basically old-school liberalism.b)Systems cannot dictate and establish values/culture,needs do.c)People don't need to be equal,because inequality doesn't exist-it is merely an imperialistic judgement.d)How would a needs-based system work?
Scarce Resource Premise
The basic idea is there, the premise of scare resources however is a fallacy. This same fallacy is responsible for the poor systems you mention in the article. You need to open your eyes, then open them again (Terry Pratchett) to see the world as it is.
Precisely Humanism
Dear OfficialJoe: Which part presents an old idea in any way? My system does not dictate anything; it gives freedom that enables the people to find real values. If people were not equal, someone would try to eat you. A need-based system works fine.
police moustache
It is not the moustache that you need to scare a person your eye is the centre point
They've done it occasionally here . . .
(Wellington New Zealand) - but it might be hard to get an 'atmosphere' going for anything other than the *most* important and exciting game, as you're fixed in your seat, every one's sober etc. But that's an advantage too! Outdoor screenings maybe?
warning system
Actually, there is a car that has such sensors on the front. I can't remember which-I believe it is a Mercedes. It has sensors that, while in cruise control, will keep the car a certain distance from the one in front.
photocard
You can get one of these from Citibank. I'm not sure this is as good as it seems. Losing a credit card can lead to serious identity theft problems, and your picture may add to the trouble. Besides, a smart thief would be charging online or via phone.
Hotel Retreats Improve Exam Scores
Wonderful observation. It makes sense that being calm and confident would help any performer, includin students taking exams....
I will refer this to a student I know here in the USA.
Thank you.
Clif Judy
Good idea, but...
The description of the process in the first paragraph is confusing for the uninitiated: The central bank does not lend *money* to the government but agrees to to increase the government's overdraft. Else, the bank would not *create* money.(jabel)
Rationality Agents
But think of all the great inventions, good ideas & sublime works of art that would be lost if we employed such agents. Einstein? Da Vinci? Van Gough?
sunday voting
I'm gonna have to vote against this. Sunday is when Christians go to Church and on Saturday, Jews go to synagogue. There is almost certain to be some type of descrimination in this method. The internet would be great, but if only there were a way.
Bad idea - mostly
This would only encourage White Van Man to drive even more impatiently and dangerously.

Fair enough if you can show that the time wasting was deliberate or negligent, but it's probably already possible in principle to sue in those circumstances.
Qualified "good idea"
If the amount of "speeding" is not unlimited, this seems okay - another way of looking at it: speed limits vary from time to time, lower at peak times.

Difficult to operate, except where traffic is heavy enough to justify electronic signs.
Dubious
Glass ought to be high value - too valuable to use like this. Frame cost not negligible. Need all similar bottles. Best way to build bottle wall: cement mortar - but labour intensive. Poor insulation & light transmission. See Isaac's Hostel, Dublin.
Not about scaring
I think the moustaches are not designed to scare, but make policeman look smarter and be respected more. Not sure whether this would work in other countries.... ;0)
Tend to agree....
Tend to agree with coshipi on this. I think suing is a little harsh. Maybe they should just make commitments to arrive within an hour time-slot, like Ocado. Then, if they don't, you get some sort of partial or total refund....
...using blind copy...
I think this is a great idea! Sign me up! (..as long as my email address isn't in a big list for spammers to collect.)
Different approaches...
...same idea: "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron;
Barbara Sher, success counselor author of "Teamworks" and "I Could Do Anything" ; also Michelle Cassou, author of "Life, Paint & Passion"; also http://www.megasociety.org/noesis/138/aptitude.html
I think this would encourage crime
If you get a possible harsh sentence for a lesser crime then why not go for it and commit the larger crime? Talk about give someone a persecution complex. It's just too negative.
universal subframe
I definitely think this is a great idea! Of course you need to design a subframe and the 'bolt-on' process that would enable this universal capability.

This is something to think about.
Colour Coding
Excellent idea to monitor your own nutritional choice in food. I definitely would like to see this system used in Australia.
already happening - some challenges
this idea is already in action in ontario, canada. it is now mandatory to do 40 hours of volunteer service to graduate high school. problem is, this is viewed as punitive. now volunteering is viewed with some disdain.
insitive
Making a system like that work would be very difficult. Most people work from 9-5 because although they work in one place, they most probably deal with other people who work elsewher, making it inpractical to split the workforce into day/night groups
Green Miles
I have revisited this idea many times over the years and still fail to see why someone hasn't adapted it for use. It's one of the best ideas on here.
Turn a 'problem' into an asset
This problem can make you a millionaire! I saw this on Oprah. NEVER spend your change. Put it in a special pocket - then in a piggy bank. Bank it once a month and invest once a year. If you are young it will grow lots. (Or put it in the charity box)
Marijuana
I agree with you, especially with the cigarettes example. But don't you think that Marijuana is a little bit "too much" to be only a "tolerated" substance (as opposed to illegal)??
Choice of language and intent in social contracts
Negotiation is a good parental model for teenagers. But their skills are not yours. This imbalance usually means contracts are drawn that heavily bias towards the parents wants. Always specify behaviours that are DESIRED. Positive language motivates
Listening and unconditional Acceptance - a therapyc
This reminds me of the seminal work of Carl Rogers. Millions of counsellors have been trained using these departure points for creating an empathic relationship with their clients. It is bloody hard to do! Without going into down time, rehearsing...
if triggered near 80mph
But if it worked at 80 mph for the average person, it would work at ~55 mph for some people, and for some it wouldn't work until ~95 mph.
civil liberties
I think this is quite a GOOD idea. I'm generally very much against the use of CCTV for civil liberty reasons, but using it to ensure honest policing seems perfectly fair.
more of the same
jews would plant a cedar tree for a boy and a myrtle for a girl when a couple would marry they would use their trees for the canopy
a roman empress sparked a revolt when her retinue chopped down a tree to repair the axle of her carriage
-Josephus
allright lamb!
first off schools have no right to be mandatory to begin with

what this world needs is less laws less restrictions and more freedom, america - a country supposedly based on freedom - has one of the biggest and most draconian law codes of them all
"Masterthinker" course by Edward de Bono
Ever read it? Essentially, it teaches remembering problem solving techniques by linking them to the body's structure.
Some bright ideas on how to make society accept new ideas is sorely needed!
Idea Bank
I believe your presentation to be one of the most relevant of projects. My life is similarly based and my profession includes taking other peoples ideas and making them real and viable. I hope you will allow us to work together to reach some of what I know to be, common goals.
Good idea
I've never built a complete new house, but I've done major alterations and extensions to existing houses this way. It needs more thought than using new, but thought's not so expensive! Results definitely more interesting, too. No quality problems.
Problems, not insurmountable though
Lots of wasted food: need more pigs than this. Smell!

Goats and chickens probably more practical. Meat waste is best used to grow maggots in for chickens to eat.
What?
Every old person on the planet may not want to do this, but that doesn't mean no one would. If the elderly can watch TV they could do this. They wouldn't have to go to court. Have you ever seen a security camera? They record what happens.
Make a reality tv show out of this
I think every idea on this website should be made into a reality tv show. Instead of extreme home makeover, they could make one of these child minding centers.
I Agree...
I agree with the idea in general, but specifically the simplistic "2 lifestyle/day and night" thing is essentially unworkable. What might work is computer-mediated time slots only minutes apart based on where you are, where you're going etc...
Interesting
I'm of a mind with mind2mind here. It's a good idea if it's backed up with schemes that can deal with the extra recycled material, if it's introduced in all areas, if landfill owners/sites can adjust (and be given help to).

I saw a programme on Ireland that suggested there was a also a huge amount of illegal fly-tipping being done, as a consequence of new measures, so that has to be considered as well.
It would be so cool.
You could have judges, just like Olympic events, that are trained at using the lie detectors. They could rank a statement, on a scale from 1 to 10 that reflects weather they think the person is telling the truth.
Compulsory voting
Faced with a two party Cartel and poor quality candidates, voters should have the option of voting for NOTA (none of the above). When the NOTA vote exceeds fifty percent the parties should re-select candidates. Nationally Proportional Representation.
additives
MSG and Aspartame and all derivates should be marked AND taxed also.

Evidence for need... Pt1
As raised by Mr GIB himself:

Well I couldn't resist a plug.
Evidence for need... Pt3
Well, maybe two plugs...

Obviously things are better in the UK!
Under UK tax law you can claim about 20p (about 35c) per mile for business use of a bicycle. So there you go!
GPS accuracy; civil liberties
GPS isn't accurate enough for this purpose. Direct communication between vehicles and radar could supplement GPS; that would work.

There are civil liberties issues about the central database, and it's not actually an essential part of the system.
Basically good idea
Is this a camera mounted in your car, or a trigger in you car for a roadside camera? It could be either or both.

Perhaps longer than 15 secs either side? Perhaps more than 1 camera to give good coverage, you can't be aiming it while driving.
Not the Islamic Cultures
It's not Islamic cultures that treat children harshly, quite the contrary, the true Islamic traditions encourage, in fact it if of utter importance, that children should be treated nicely and gently in order for them to be raised properly.
WAKMAH
I have a device thats makes doorhandles in restrooms good fun. See www.wakmah.co.uk

Rgds Mike
Author's comment
I only put that bit about being private because I wasn't concentrating, and couldn't be bothered to think what to put in the box - I'm quite chatty really...
The problem is the modularity
Hum,well. Great idea in the facts, but...this is unreacheable. The fact is computer architecture changes fluently. Just think about IDE, AGP, PCI, PCI Express, Serial ATA, without talking about 32 or 64 bits chipset, usb 1.0-2 and ieee1394. Forget it!
Automating Transport
Automating vehicles on pavements has a large number of problems. Not only are the automating components not completely reliable but there is the difficulty of changing environmental factors. rain snow, and grade interractions. too unreliable.
Grade separated environment
Automation requires a grade separated environment with a fixed rigidly controled pathway. Elevated beams can accomplish that. add elctric propulsion and utilize the beam for elect distribution and transports energy consumption could be reduced to 0.
No fear
There's since been a general air of "calm down". See <A HREF="http://globalideas.blogs.com/the_global_ideas_blog/2004/06/grey_goo_and_th.html">this piece</A> in the Global Ideas Blog for more.
tower block city
Better to have multiple towers reasonably well-spaced, linked at various heights with enclosed bridges. Not so tall. Everyone closer to the centre; multiple escape routes; less shadow problem than a single wide short tower.
artificial mountains
Yes, of course artificial mountains would cause relief rainfall. But they'd have to be awfully big - MUCH bigger than the pyramids. The energy spent building them would be better spent desalinating water...
PNG Fresh Water Export
This is quoted in Australian water report Talking Water at www.farmhand.org.au Highly interesting but perhaps uneconomic. I am interested in Spragg Bags - barging PNG Fly River water by sea to set up a fresh water export industry using ocean currents
coshipi
Thanks for writing. I've no proper scientific knowledge so I'm interested to read what you say. So, the idea would not be viable in its own right, but what about combining the concept (new shape) with other ambitious architect projects eg.in Dubai?
coshipi2
Also, how big if it's high? What about an array of massive inflatable forms temporarily tethered over a drought area? Maybe this has been tried?
Right!
It's being compulsory that is so alienating. When I arranged for some unenthusiastic students to be able to read magazines (at their request) instead of being taught, they soon decided to rejoin the group and after that we all got on fine.
food colour coding
They cant be serious about using green as being high in sugar can they. I would think the 3 categories would each have their grading separately so it would be red on each to denote high and green to denote safe.
driving too close
I used to drive in excess of 100,000 miles a year and cannot believe many drivers are unaware of how close they are. Anyway it is dependent on the speeds of the vehicles. If a variable device could be produced this could also be used in parking.
ID cards
This sensitive subject has omitted the one piece of data that is special to each of us....that is DNA. Forgetting all the horror stories it is possible just to use 'markers' from the DNA just to silence the critics when other methods have failed.
Tower City
Whittier, Alaska has such a building.
spiritual earth honoring retirement community
I love the idea, and maybe it will work better in Nevada, but here in Texas the fundies complain about anything that isn't "Biblical".
secular ten commandments
If people don't pay attention to the traditional ten commandments, why would they care about a subsititute?
enforcement is easy
You enforce it as you do incest and child abuse. Children of school age can be educated to report passive smoking to teachers etc. With younger children its a bit trickier but minders at child-care centres can be trained to sniff clothes etc.
no tv ads
Tobacco companies may make 100 billion annually, they would get their money back on these ads in any case, in Australia TV ads have been banned for decades and smoking rates have dropped to about a third. Best to keep them banned.
cohousing costs...
Ithaca Ecovilliage out of reach for working class-- would need substantial down payment. Local wages just wouldn't pay the mortgage. Right now (6/2004) there is a listing of a a 500 sq ft unit there for 129k.
stay awake sensor
You never hear of train drivers falling asleep. Do they use a dead-mans handle?..maybe a similar type of device could be fitted to lorries
tailgating
Is it Germany where tailgating is an offence? Maybe we should bring in tougher motoring laws and make a specific law for tailgating...maybe a £200 fine!
closing a ring road
If we were to close ring roads in UK cars would jam our streets in towns and cities. Maybe a better solution would be to make the inner roads traffic free and build more ring roads!
PSF
Excellent idea. First read in Eenadu newspaper and then crawled here thru google. Ideally suited to India and Africa. This project should be implemented in tribal areas of Araku and Paderu in Visakhapatnam dist. AP. where trees r cut for living etc.
WRONG
And at the same time, get US citizens to pay for my social security as well, only because they are the most powerful nation of the world.
Scalp massage
I think that is a wonderful idea. Both of my parents died from cancer and I think that would have been a perfect way for someone to show physical affection especially those who aren't the "touchy-feely" type.
fog pond
how long does the oil last?
I've seen vegtable oil disapate very shortly from on top of oil. In Texas the temp drops off too. Thus. a solar pond could be used to heat water to flow into a pit
distiller. using a tarp with a stone in it.
This already exists
We have developed such a solution which is live with online gaming company William Hill. You can bet online having bought an e-Cash voucher and you can withdraw your winnings in cash. No Credit Cards needed! Go to http://www.smartvoucher.com
litter
I am 100% behind this suggestion. In fact I would go further than this. If volunteers could be found to take a carrier bag and collect tins, packaging etc in their immediate neigbourhood and make their environment a much nicer place.
national leaders
As a side issue from this what checks are made on prospective leaders in their fitness to govern. We hear of potential leaders being 'psychologically flawed'. Do we have to wait and endure any consequences to find out. Tests are available!
voting
Sounds a good idea until you realise you are voting for an individual first and not the party he represents although maybe you have a point and it is the party we should be selecting.
Excellent Idea
This is an excellent idea. The world should take this idea more seriously and manufacturers and consumres both should be persuaded towards this thing through some sort of Govt. legislation in this regard.
Problems? Yes, but...
they're not insoluble. Reliability certainly is a problem, but again, not insuperable. Agreed that fixed controlled pathways would make it much easier, and have other benefits - but there's a "how do we get there from here" issue there.
Add a webcam?
Why not increase the value to commuters by including a webcam of each platform to try to gauge congestion (possible cancellations even) and make informed decisions about whether to stay late at the office.
Too dangerous
Asking political leaders to think on their feet? Interesting concept, but when issues of national security are at stake, then proper considered negotiation should be the way forward, not some cheap form of entertainment. Agree with Kwickham too!
Each graded separately
Think each category needs its own grading icon. What about integrating the barcode with point of sale systems to highlight combined purchases as making a meal too high in fat or sugar or sodium. Gets complex when you do a weekly shop altogether mind!
total automobile power?
Would the computer actually override the manual inputs of the driver if the distances were unsafe? I think this has dangerous repercussions. Audible warning yes, but nothing more. Rear sensors could warn of car too close behind, awareness means safer
Excellent idea
Many shares bought in the tech boom are now worth mere fractions, causing the holder headaches and the company registrars headaches too. Pooling them ion a charity account makes total sense.
Too much aid?
Would it project a steady pace, the pace the current record holder ran at? a runners planned pace? Too complex with having front runners and strong finishers to cater for. Also takes away from learning to pace yourself and th skill that involves.
highways
sounds promising! I believe the major wear is confined to braking areas and with cornering. As an aside a straight line approach could be made at large roundabouts by cutting through the centre and adding extra traffic lights. Unbelievably it works!
.... and
War is a manifestation of a total breakdown in communication. While there is communication there is hope. Which form of cheap entertainment would you like,
a televised debate or war? Obviously intented to be in addition to other diplomacy.
Yes ... and
Quite right, one of the best ways to kill an idea is to say "its the same as", more than calling it stupid etc.

If its similar to something, focus on the differences.
drugs at birth
Also, there was a study that found that babies whose mothers had drugs at birth, were far more likely to take drugs as teenagers, than those whose mothers didn't.
Real life makes it fail...
This morning on the M40, I deliberately kept a safe distance for the car in front. On no less than FIVE occassions in 9.6 miles, a car cut me up by "filtering" into the "gap" and hence I had to drop back some more. Infuriating for me and cars behind.
What if:
If that suggestion by Iraq had been taken up the world would probably be a safer place today! The debates for President are accepted it seems but not between leaders of different countries which I think is more important. History will show this!
reporting
There are many things while motoring that need to be reported. For instance excessive black diesel smoke emitted from buses and lorries could be reported to some government agency...only the registration no. plate is required.
twisted thinking
Colin Powell defends the actions of invading Iraq today and cites the mass graves under Saddam....but what about the thousands of innocent Iraqis killed by American rockets and bombs..is their any justice?
don't just read it, do it
yes,

i go to a laughing club

if there isn't one nearby, then start one
more to this
I remember Mr Plod was once on holiday and Noddy locked every one up. Of course, the crime rate goes down if lots of people are locked up (2million+ in the US), so what.

There is something in the zero tolerance idea, though as this post implies, i
interesting
Its an interesting idea, related is the idea that ideas have their own cycles of evolution. Ideas might be popular for a while, then may prove to be useless.
software exists
Adobe Acrobat does something similar, though binding is still an issue.
absolutely
Tim Moore is spot on.

Also, the woman was lucky she didn't fall foul of a 'zero tolerance' jailing policy lol
coasting
You may achieve savings in fuel costs and more satisfaction but this is achieved at a cost to other motorists who have to follow behind you. Your 'marching out of step' could create havoc!
Environmental issues
I think there are environmental issues with putting lots of bodies in the sea, just as there are with filling up land or burning them. The Natural Death Centre (see above) maintains that woodland burial, in which a biodegradable coffin is used, and a tree is planted instead of a gravestone, is the most eco-friendly and sustainable type of funeral.
Preferable to protest
I prefer this idea to the protest campaign detailed in the idea before (at www.nomoreaolcds.com) This idea seems to be about solving the problem, rather than making a point about it....
traffic lights
I think you may have a point about this but would tackle it slightly different. Why not have say 4 or 5 colours so there is no abrupt change from green to amber to red which causes harsher brake use.
parking
Excellent idea in theory but the logistics of the multi-storey would mean many lost spaces. It could however be used quite successfully in open plan car parks and could be quite desirable.
Continued "inklings" of success
Saturday, Jun 19,04, a student turned in her report. Her teacher labled her "uninspired", "Does not study",etc, etc, etc
Yet her otherwise terrible grades contained three letter grade improvements. "F" to a "D", "F to a "C".
She now is "both".
passive smoking
I agree about the dangers of passive smoking. Here in the UK it is taken seriously and many bans put in place. But I see the real offence is to smoke around young children in the home. The UK has the highest rates of Asthma in the world..any link?
Visible display to show rate of electricity use
realy Good Idea. Bar Graph with counter for KWHR will help the consumer to save/ minimise usage.
Pedal-power for computers and office electricity
We can use the same idea for home too. Suitable dynamo and battery charger is required. If the house is having Solar panel then this can be an addtional generator.
Polyfidelity?
It is an intresting consept. I just don't think you could get all the people to agree enough to make it work for long. Human nature is a tricky thing, way too many emotions to deal with there.
Good Idea
I consult public schools in the areas of recruitment and communications. Diversity is always a tricky idea. You commercial idea is a bit risky in regards to the message but you are on the right track.

Turning Dreams Into Reality
My name is Mike and I am a retired carpenter due to two mental illneses.I almost gave up on my dream to be an inventor someday until I came across GIB.My hope and dreams have come alive again and I hope someday to be able to function in society as a viable citizen and not a zombie.I read about other brilliant people who struggled with social interaction and mood swings as I do and I found out they may have been considered mentally ill by today's standards.Instead of being put in a box they stayed focused and pursued thier dreams. This is my dream to do the same.I encourage and appreciate any feedback.Sincerely,Mike
Solution exists
Go into a Will Hill Bookies & buy a QuickCashVoucher & text it. The recipient needs to know the amount of the "voucher" & can go into the nearest Will Hill & "cash" the voucher providing they know the amount will be issued with cash. Watch this space
US president
There is no doubt who calls the shots when it comes to world foreign policy. The problem is Bush + the misguided neo-cons have split world opinion to make many countries ungovernable mostly in the Middle East. Bring back the Clintons!!
photos on credit cards
I think this is an excellent idea. In fact I had one about 10 years ago. Many shopkeepers thought it a good idea not many failed to notice it. It was withdrawn as being too expensive (about £1)..false economy I thought at the time!
Prison Transitional Housing
Kay, your ideas are very good. An internal prison system to counteract institutionalization only serves to continue the cycle of institutionalization. We have a private, transitional housing facility north of Houston. www.Wholeway.org
WHY NOT IN AMERICA
Los Vegas has legal prostitution. You will never live to see it country wide though. I feel it is a womans choice to sell herself if she is so inclined. That does not mean all men would use that service. Try as we may, you cannot regulate morality.
Woodland burial preferred
Woodland burial is better. Corpses float, and many would end up on beaches. There aren't enough large scavengers in the sea to eat them all! The only problem with burial is the loony idea that you have to mark the site forever. Put me in the compost!
Front desk
The person on the front desk would inevitably misunderstand, send you to the wrong place or make some really deflating remark. Best get on and do it yourself straightaway!
UK John
Did you ever find that focus article? It hasn't reached me yet.
Not got the point!
The intention is not to shove the bodies overboard to be eaten by sea creatures. Obviously the bodies would be wrapped in non biodegradable wrappings and weighted down. Land burials have to be on consecrated ground and not under any old planting!
falling asleep at wheel
I have to admit it! Many times during the course of my work fell asleep at the wheel. Motorway driving is the worst. The long boring stretches dull the senses and drifting off is gradual. More rest places are required..20-30 miles is too long!
happy divorce?
When a marriage is until death us do part a divorce is just an acknowledgement that the couple failed. Not a reason to cellibrate. A better solution is a marriage that does not last until death but disapates after 7 years. No need to inform anyone.
universal time
Excellent idea! Maybe at the same time eliminate BST (British Summer Time)changes when we have to alter our clocks and watches by one hour twice a year so we are continually out of step with Europe and the world. Plays havoc with timetables!
CRAZY IDEA
this is already done in China by Sony & other companies. They own thier staff, it is akin to slave labour you can't afford to leave. In China the rights of the workers aren't as great asin the west - giving up rights for comfort looses you both.
90% more
If we only use 10% of our brain what are missing? Try using only one finger for an hour and see how little you can achieve. Then think about how much people who can only use a single toe do achieve.
WHY NOT BE NICE.
There is enough meaness in the world as it is.
common sense!
You shoe a horse ! foot at the time, anything else is just asking for a mess to happen! I dont want my doctor to do needlepoint while he operates on me!
running cars on cooking oil
There is a similar scheme up and running in the UK which I believe uses rape seed oil which can be bought from your local supermarket. An adjustment is required to the engine though. The main drawback is the smell emitted from the exhaust.
auto pilot
Excellent idea! In fact many planes I believe are fitted with an autopilot for landing in fog and poor visibility so it would just require an extension of this but in a mode that cannot be overridden by the pilot.
Capacity
Woodland burials seem to provide an alternative to normal burials. There are 200 sites according to their website. UK population is approx 60million. Say 1/3 opt for burial. That is 20 million individual plots required during the next 70 years?
Cannot believe deliberately rebelling?
I think you're wrong, and most of those caught in speed traps are deliberate speeders. They're not "turned into lawbreakers" by the cameras, they're criminals already. The cameras should be hidden, so people obey the law all the time.
Not got the point?
Non-biodegradable wrappings? Environmentally worse than floating corpses. Why should my atheist's body be buried in consecrated ground? Infringement of my civil liberties! 20 million plots is ~40 km² at worst - a lot, but not unmanageable.
speed interviewing
You may have a point! They do say an interviewer with a CV in front of him will consciously decide to hire an individual from the opening conversation. Why prolong the agony for the job hunter!
head up display
You may have hit on a winner! The technology is there! Fighter pilots in some aircraft are able to do this. So if the cost is right this method should be made obtainable.
Charity Coinboxes at Airport Security
Nice idea. A similar idea has been used in some international airports in Asia (def'ly in Japan), wherein departing international travels can donate to charity all of the smaller denomination coins instead of keeping them or converting them.
"put-stuff-you-don't-want-on-the-street" day....
This is done in the area where I live, Pittsfield, Maine and in neighbouring Palmyra, Maine (although it is once a year it allows households to rid themselves of unwanted items and others to acquire needed items).
Deliberate speeding
It is quite clear that many drivers are deliberately speeding. You see them brake when they reach the camera and then speed up again afterwards. It was a retrograde step to paint cameras yellow, since it only encourages this sudden braking, which i
Falling asleep
On motorways falling asleep is not regarded as an "emergency" so the police will prosecute if you stop on the hard shoulder for that reason alone. Crazy.
Failure?
Not sure I see anh1965's problem. On a motorway a safe distance is 70 yards. Surely there's nothing wrong with a car moving into a gap that size?
Nice
Good idea. However, the main problem with the American education system is dicipline and lack of responsibility. Corporal punishment would end lots of problems in our schools today.
?
You can drive 30 miles in 15 minutes if you want, i do it all the time. broadcasting your horn to other cars would cause a rucus. All the teens beeping their horns constantly to scare other possibly causing a collision.
Nice BUT...
A recent BBC documentary exposed post office workers / mail sorters themselves as being the source of much of this fraud. Unfortunately your idea would not eradicate this problem.
Childcare collectives
An original idea however I believe it is overly idealistic for the world we live in . The process of organising such a scheme would we cluttered with codes of practice, legislative requirements compounded with the need to integrate the community.
Where it's happening already
Two things, check out the effects of Cuban society where doctors get the same pay as everyone else; & "Ithaca Hours"
http://www.lightlink.com/hours/ithacahours/ This has been going since 1991 where people trade by the hour with others.
as a plane substitution, it's OK...
Ray Belonge' came up with the idea of an urban monorail, with the cars being privately owned self-contained apts. Then traditional monorail junctions would apply, and anyone could go wherever they want to within urban areas.
Inflatable mountains
I'm not sure about this one. The thermal behaviour of large inflated structures would need analysis and probably experiment. Another possibility is altering the reflectivity of the ground with metallized plastic sheet.
theworldvotes.org
There's a whole website dedicated to this idea...with lots of for and against opinions. It's a nice idea in theory, but quite frankly the american political system is messed up, it would never work - see next post....
the US media
It's the US media that needs sorting out, how can any one make an informed decision when they r not being informed, just fed ridiculous propaganda, if ppl knew what was going on, maybe they would take action. that goes for world media, 2 much power
social hoax
that is the common idea but do you really think life as we know it would stop? ambition has far more to do with the quality of life than the quantity. but i got my answer: humanity IS sick and greedy!
go down in flames, but dont forget your wallet
Land reclamation: using landfill to save the coastline
I believe this is already being done in Japan, where artificial islands are being built on top of landfill.
Facts....
A few points (the Global Ideas Bank also runs the Natural Death Centre, Uk experts on burial law): woodland burial grounds could not cope with the demand at present, but with re-use strategies, faster degradation and realistic burial leases they could; land burials do NOT have to be on consecrated ground: many private land burials take place each year; if we buried large numbers of people at sea, it could have a massive effect on the marine life ecosystems.
I agree.
Good idea, i do it myself sometimes, it certainly makes driving mellow. I take my car out of gear when braking, as it stops the engine slowing the car - and uses petrol for braking. The only reservation i have is the need to keep the battery charged
Aaaarrrrghhhh!
Least said, soonest mended. I really must implement my mobile phone zapper - a simple pocket device that burns out the circuitry in every mobile phone within range. Actually not all that difficult to make. (Destroys trannie radios, too!)
postal voting no better
postal voting, recently undertaken in parts of Britain during local and European elections, has been fraught with problems; with one member of the family voting for the others.
exclusive or not?
Would you still only get one vote? That would be interesting, having to decide whether to vote for one party or, in the on vote against, support all the parties not voted against.
something to discuss
Angle,

Nice to meet you. actually I hope to discuss with you about the phone directory among the town. I have one hope, I hope to create a virtual village amonth all people, to share info, discuss, communication. Do you have any idea ?
A Decade Later...
It's been over ten years since Eve contributed this "exposé" on the experiment known as Kerista. I've been anticipating her subsequent book, it would make for good reading today, and I wish for her to have no worries about money :)

I was a member on two different "go arounds" meaning I joined in the winter of '87, left, returned and left for the final time six months before the confrontation with Jud that signaled the ending of the end.

As Eve so righteously put it, others no doubt will have different perspectives. From my perspective I believe the underlying demise of the "trip" was inequality, which was covered in the second of their 88 standards which comprised the "written social contract."

That standard read:

"2. Equality. No special privileges accorded to any member. Shared leadership, rather than one person being "The Leader," is always used. Sophisticated approach allows appreciation of differences between individual people (differences of skills, talents, temperament, and so forth) without interfering with the basic sense of equality. Emotions or behavior emanating from an inferiority/superiority coomples are encountered and contained by all members.

This simply was not true in reality nor was it practiced universally.

Historically, experiments of this genre, (meaning "intentional communities", and acknowledging Kerista's coining of the term "polyfidelity") have reached a critical point of development and failed. In all cases this failure is due, in great part to inadequately distributed leadership responsibility.

Obviously, as the last manifestation of Keristan lasted over 21 years, you can get people to agree enough to make it work. It really is more a consideration of what one defines as a "working" model.

Kerista's "model" was based on a "written social contract" and that model is sound. The entire social contract hinged on a truly democratic decision making process and objective equality. Since neither was "purely" present in this experiment it ultimately collapsed under it's own weight.

As Eve pointed out, the communal fund was running in the red for quite some time, and this too is a misnomer. The mathematics of collective endeavor are sound, just look at any successful company. What occured with Kerista's shared income scheme was denial and neglect, period.

The challenges of such an undertaking are as abundant as it's potential rewards. Moreso than simply complex, they are "compound complex." Nevertheless, one can only imagine what could have been if the integrity built into their own social contract had passionately been embraced and adhered to by all involved.

Just for the record, I think if anything about the "trip" was a "bust" it's the bullshit about "intentional friendship", and "current intention of lifetiime involvement", as I truly have NOTHING going on with any of these people any longer.

C'est la vie!

Accountability and consistency
Encouraging personal accountability is good but don't confuse this with consistency. Being overly consistent means having a mind closed to a change of view. Ghandi, accused of inconsistency, said he was not interested in consistency - only truth.
asthma
studies in Australia have shown a link between passive smoking and asthma
also sids
and ... and ... etc.

one new thing i learnt recently,
heavy smokers are very prone to arthritis
chess in the parks
chess is played in many parks around the world, including Hyde park Sydney, so why not Hyde park London.

I teach how to generate discoveries about learning any movement skill (beyond trial & error) with easy but apparently "uncontrollable" juggling toys. Also, you must check out the creative thinking course taught to school age kids by Edward de Bono...
Say more, I'm confused
This would be a mobile vehicle or caravan that drives to different locations and bring childcare, new play areas & play equipment to wherever parents are ...to help parents to learn to be better parents, or to help parents interview babysitters...?
Minor crimes
Just to make it clear, I was thinking that SOLVING the crime would receive more attention. The sentence would be the same as it always was for such a crime.
Community activities
To quote from the website, the service, in which the creche comes to your choice of venue (not in a special vehicle).....started up because of the founder "discovering that there was nowhere she could leave her children for short periods of time to engage in community activities".

I've added the website to the idea above....
Orchestra...
Would be interesting at pop concerts too.
In the 'quiet' carriage on trains, perhaps a text could be sent on entry to remind people to turn off their mobile.
Courageous post
What a pity your post was not understood..most of us think in utopias like and end by itself, instead of considering the way that leads us to a better world. If I give you a lesson in spanish and you teach me english, there is no $ involved (example)

Meditation
Yes, I think I may have experienced this. I started meditating in 2001 and experienced the positive side and made meditation a daily habit for about a year. I started again earlier this year and experienced depression that lifted when I stopped.
Testing schools by subsequent unempoyment rate of pupils

support service for new moms
Great idea! Fortunately it exhists. One such organization is the International Moms Club http://www.momsclub.org/links.html There are chapters all over the world providing support groups and "play dates" for new moms, moms and children.
Consciousness
Now all the things you mention are correct but stem from our backward consciousness. Its not a new political system that is the answer its changing our consciousness. Many attempts have been made by great souls incl Jesus Buddha now were at the Xrds
Similar to Apotekracy
This reminds me of Apotekracy.
potassium for arthritis
The researchers should have tried to determine what in vegetables is responsible for improving rheumatoid arthritis. If they had, they would have found that the high potassium content per calorie of vegetable juice is largely responsible.
a wonderful thought
but its feasibility is limited by what drives the banks and venture capitalists....profit...still, it can't hurt to try anything at this point!
a great idea
you might want to talk to the folks at Odyssey of the Mind....the program is for kids (k thru college), but its emphasis is creative problem solving...check it out!!

Hmmm. Major corporations and ideas. This makes for interesting reading:

A different method required
I agree that fraud cannot be totally eliminated but this simple solution would go some way in alleviating the problem. Inter-office transfers are more secure than mail!
deliberate speeding
I am still not convinced of this. I have just returned from a driving holiday in France covering 2000 miles without seeing 1 speed camera and only a handful of traffic cops. How do the drivers achieve such good driving habits and what can we copy?
National Union fof Secondary Students
A union is necessary for secondary students to empower them & give them input into the type of curriculum and courses in schools. Students must be able to choose courses to help develop their unique talents and potentials, not just serve the economy
Testing schools by subsequent unemployment rate of pupils
1. You need to limit the calculation to those who don't go to college afterwards.
2. As well as considering different time periods, different schools' levels should be put into consideration as well.
Not all it seems..
A good idea in theory but have you heard of the Atkins diet where you are able to eat as much fatty foods as you want and still lose weight. This is not a gimmick..I have tried it and lost 25lbs in weight. It is carbohydrate that causes weight gain.
local referendums
Excellent idea in theory. In was tried recently in the UK. It resulted in overwhelming support for education cuts which the rich were able ignore but seriously affected the lower classes. An extension of Thatcherism!
Weapons
If it hasn't already been done, there could be a rating for weapons (a 'fatality quotient' perhaps). This could be worked out by calculating the number of fatalities/injuries if a weapon is used in a area with a pre-specified population density.
Appointments
A big problem (with my doctor) is people booking appointments and failing to turn up.
computer appointments
I would also like to see Doctors appointments made by computer but over the internet from the patients home address. Vacant slots would be displayed to choose. Cancellation would also be an easy matter (eg UKJohn ref above)
Cluster Bombs
Do we have to wait for rogue nations to aquire these before making them illegal weapons?

Interesting review
I must find this book. It's about time the high priests of science discover that we are no longer living in the days of Galileo when knowledge can be controlled through force of law and religious and capitalistic control.
Highways
This idea would be initially limited to Express Highways such as Interstate Highways in the US or Auto Strada and Auto Bahn in Europe....idea is to use all asphalt or concrete evenly.

Same Idea with something to add
3 day work scheme

Several factories, Banks, construction companies, government establishments can go for 3 day week employees who shall work either MON to WEDNESDAY or THURSDAY to SATURDAY so that twice the number of people can be employed by the same establishment. 3 day pay shall be paid to the employees i.e. for 3 x 8 = 24 hours (working hours may be increased as 3 x 10 = 30 hours a week ).

This will enable more production or service and company shall not loose in terms of money but more productivity can be ensured since employees work 3 days in a week and 4 days off.

Company shall run all 6 days with two sets of employees one set from Monday to Wednesday and another set from Thursday to Saturday. The supervisors or managers may work for 4 day week from Mon – Thursday and the sub or Assistant managers can work from Wednesday – Saturday so that two day overlapping period is there for their communications and meeting. Since company or office runs for all six days more production can be achieved. If we increase daily hours from 8 to 10 hours by this way a work week becomes 60 hours instead of the current 40 hours a week. More number employees can be accommodated in the same establishment. Since the intake is twice the number of employees more jobs can be generated in this way. Leave days for employees shall also be reduced since the employee has 4 days off in a week. Sunday is off for all employees in the week.

unread section
I think you may have a point here. The Sunday Times has about 7 sections and I regularly throw 3 sections away.
PMQs
I suppose the type of question the PM would get this week would be:
"were you aware of what was in the caviats in the IRAQ dossier and if yes when did you know?"
We are using the wrong system!
Referring to driving in France...a driver does not continually have to check what speed should be doing. Entering a village is 50kph and the exit sign from the village is so marked. The confusion that exists in Britain is totally unproductive!
Definitely
A long overdue idea... I had a related idea regarding a single unified forum to facilitate direct communication with gov't and media etc, which i'll have to post up, but this is a definite if anyone has the time to pitch for a grant (in australia?)
Free will
I don't think it is ever a good idea for governments to have an incentive to police social issues (like obesity) Free will (to do the right thing) is the most important thing in any free society, and microregulation hinders this free will.
dangerous?
As a (jaywalking) pedestrian, I would appreciate this indication as to when a lights about to turn green, but I expect it would be abused, and perhaps lead to accidents with people jumping the lights the instant it goes green...
Excellent Idea, Nothing Implementable
There has to be an alternative to the current model of EverExpandingEconomy.
EEE promotes active reduction in a products quality or functionality to justify/elevate a more expensive product. The world has its brakes on someone needs cut the cable
Charity Coinboxes at Airport Security
It definitely adds up:

From October 2003 until early July 2004, "the [U.S.] Transportation Security Administration deposited $250,436.65 in airport change into the federal government's general fund."

See http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/s
Language - it tells us how we think
I think Mr Snow has an excellent point: The language we hear and use shapes how we think. As a person who writes for my county, it is a point I will incorporate into my future work.
confusion
I don't think there's much confusion. It's just a culture of wilful criminality that's developed here. Drivers know damn well when they're speeding. Occasionally limit signs are obscured by greenery or whatever, but it's not the usual reason.
I like it - could be very cheap, too
I remember discussing this idea with Nick Saunders many years ago. To my shame I've never actually tried it :( you could use a secondhand alternator from a car, or better, from a truck. It'd need gearing up - old washing machine pulleys and belt.
confusion
There is a letter in the Mail that echoes my concerns. It was from a trucker who uses the A34 where there are far too many cameras. The speed limit goes up and down like a yoyo and he found it hard to concentrate on driving..try it sometime..I have!
I agree.
Yeah, I too am ashamed I've not tried it yet -- that's why I posted the idea so that atleast someone with more get-up-and-go might try it :-) I'm sure most parts could be obtained from a scrap yard for an initial experiment.
Citizen Certification
Great idea! I imagine there are many people who don't realize that the way they are driving is offensive and could lead to road rage. Notifying the police of erratic driving could lead to a person becoming aware they have a problem.
Number of citizens
Are you talking about nationwide certification as 4 digits would only cater for 9999 max no of citizens to be used or have I misread your article?
Yes, good idea.
I suppose it should be put into those citizenship classes that I've heard childen have now.
Confusion
If you stick to the law, you don't need to worry about cameras. And as long as the signs aren't obscured, it's no problem keeping track of speed limits - unless you're completely stupid, I suppose. If he's that stupid, how did he pass his test(s)?
criminals
OK here is a simple test..how many of your friends and aquaintances have been caught by a speed camera. (the national average must be about 1 in 8). Do you or they regard themselves as criminals?
Im in the banking industry so I see alot of fraud issues. What I do since Im aware of this is I put on the back of the card on the signature line "CHECK ID". 99% of the time Im asked for my id. Personal vigilance is more effective than systematic.
Contents
In case this isn't clear...I was thinking of a list of contents, not the actual contents.
There could also be an index of names, for those searching for specific people etc.
Crime and poverty
I think crime relates to poverty more than DNA.
Anti-noise
Yes, More useful and cost effective than damping /absorbtion techniques.
nappy laundry service
I know Ruth's idea will work, because it worked for years. There were no such things as disposable diapers when my kids were little, and I had this service before I got a washer. It included pickup and delivery and it worked like a charm!

Interesting
As a student of Economics I do agree with you wholly and think that your comments are insightful. I also think that poverty is avoidable. Excellent idea.
good idea
The problem in rural areas would be with people who can't get broadband and couldn't afford modem charges, the stress of a modem (slow, expensive and ties up line) would negate your good work! Very good idea though I hope you can make it work somehow
practical social invention
what a good idea. I hope you can make it work, it would save hours of searching and form filling! good luck, Chris.
good thinking
Very similar to my own idea so I have to agree it is a good one! My idea is on a smaller scale to unite a rural community via a village website. If more people did this they could all join up into Miguel's grand one. An organic web of people.
brilliant article
totally agree with all your suggestions! If only it could happen...

Chris
linguistic programming
I agree with the language we use shaping the way we think. but i disagree with our environment rather then the environment. Our environment puts us in the role of god - which is exactly the problem with the 100's of years of male dominated science.
continuation
to say 'our environment' makes it sound as though we own it. We are just blips on the history of the planet, and Gaia will go on long (and probably better) after we go.
A can-do attitude
The success of the American economy is much envied throughout the world. This must be put down to the 'can-do attitude' that most Americans have. They are certainly the worlds most positive nation!
Yes, it would help a lot.
I like this. Being in IT I can see it would be very benificial, but also I can see it would be an uphill struggle to persuade most people that it's a good idea, unfortunately.
Losing touch
An "I've lost your email address" service could be done too.
Exercise
Instead of legally mandating exercise at work, a federal fund should be set up to provide large companies with money for rewarding employees for exercising. These rewards could range from increases in health care benefits to employee parties.
FESIBILITY AND TRANSITION
As Marx observed after the failure of the Paris commune to function when bureacratic class had been removed, how do we run the state? It's all very well to say we intend to remove the political class and a large swathe of the civil service.
reading food labels
I think your problem is already solved.
Take a look at RFID technology.

Mineral Water
Is this a business idea that you have underway or are planning to get it underway? sounds like a great idea!
Sightseeing balloons
In London some years ago there was a fixed balloon that would carry sightseers to see the view. A balloon such as this could be part of the travelling museum.
Time table
And also a time table for trains passing thought that station and info about busses from nearby stops.
Tax free wage
Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious (economics was never my thing!) but wouldn't this mean the government is just paying money and not getting anything back, making the Exchequer much worse off?
reading food labels
I am aware of RFID, and tags will be placed on food packaging in the future. There should be a reader that will scan the tags to identify foods that meet your dietary criteria.
A can-do attitude
The success of the American economy is much envied throughout the world.
"Materialism and morality have an inverse relationship — when one increases the other decreases" Mahatma Gandhi
Great Idea
I am currently looking at the reuse of CRT (TV and Computer Screen) Glass in manufacturing, mixed with other materials, into bricks suitable for building materials. This would fit in with this concept but provide strength in the structure.
More Speeding Flashes
Whilst I agree with the need to reduce speed would a driver see or take any notice of a flashed message -and how do you enforce it? Would it not be better to equip cars with an electronic speed limiter system controlled by roadside transmitters?
...As in "reality game show" material...
Here are three other suggestions: giving directions to someone else in a "treasure hunt" sort of challenge; getting an inordinate number of children ready for and driven to school & having a month to train a kitten to use a human toilet..!
OK, email me
...to discuss this further. Write to me from my site at www.franis.org/868 Or, use the top right hand column of this page where it says "contact the author."
Our environment
Thanks for your comments and support. I actually don't believe that using the posessive adjective 'our' implies exclusive ownership, either of the planet or of anything else. Rather, 'our environment ' refers to the conditions pertaining around the place where we live. Thus - our town, my place, our planet etc . If there is any implication of ownership, it should be viewed as transient (our hotel) or very weak (our rented appartment).
Random Games
Excellent idea! Would be great fun to watch and much more practical and interesting than the Olympic Games.
Life's supposed to be just that.
In my opinion anyway.

Crossword Puzzle Experiment
I saw Rupert lecture in New Zealand a decade ago or more. He described a morphic fields experiment using the Times crossword. People were asked to solve it before it was published and another group after. The later group found it easier to solve...
Libraries
These books would also be good for libraries, as library books often have pages torn out or scribbled on. The libraries would be able to replace single pages.
I agree.
Yes I too think TV remote controls should work this way, especially since you have three digit channel numbers now. You may beable to get 3rd party ones that work this way.
Clarity of Purpose
My suggestion was for a specific Idea Camp. Although there are many fantastic other camps out there (moonwindstarsky, et al), they aren't in the speicifc business of helping kids come up with creative ideas and how to go about honing the skills required to do so at will. The kids would be out in nature, of course, but Idea Camp would not be a "nature camp" per se.
AMAZINGLY 100% TRUE!
WHEREVER YOUR AT, THERE YOU ARE!
The fact is we all cant be "super stars". Remenber even in Rome, sombody had to dig a ditch! FAME & FORTUNE are NOT yours by divine right, nor is HAPPINESS. You want it, then work for it. You might get it, its a bet
good on paper/ but...
It couldent work in the real world. Here's why. The youths you speak of DONT CARE!. If you postponed there "comming of age" 20 years they would still mess up out of rebellion if nothing else. There are 18-80 year olds who still are not mature adults.
It's going on now!
Somewhere some rich nut is already all over this thing, bet on it! Remember if you can think it up, some GOVERNMENT is already testing it in some secret lab somewhere, thats a reality! not just a crazy thought.
great idea!
Lets face it, kids are giong to be kids. But as long as they have not got into real trouble, ie, vandelism, theft, violent crime etc, Then YES, give them a tax break, and a collage tuition break too! It just might make a real differnce! It cant hurt any
Not ready yet!
The public are not yet ready to accept cloning of humans and the methods are too unsafe. But if we could bring back the likes of Newton; Constable; Darwin and Dickens could anyone object? We have to look into the future to retrieve the past!
Babysteps to a better world
Most projects are too big to handle. Too time consuming, too demanding. This is easy! I celebrated my son´s birthday with 100% love and fun but 50% money (less money on presents and food). 50% to charity. GREAT FUN! Eve, journalist, Finland.
good plan
An excellent and creative idea - however I'd be wary of the impact of such a sudden change in the delicate food chain.
hmmm
Yer those free CD's, especially AOL ones! Grr they annoy me... an excellent suggestion, environmentally sound. It would be down to the local councils to implement such a scheme I guess??
I wish! I would have got it.
I like this. Children who obey the law get no reward currently, which is a bad message from society. I think the tax break should only last ten years though, so that those who did fall foul of the law don't feel forever branded and disadvantaged.
Time will turn still
If we keep bringing the great minds from the past, I feel that it will limit us from being able to accept new changes. I would prefer to be on the lookout for the future great minds and let the greatness of the past be a source of inspiration.
can top cover
I totally disagree with this as, to me, it would be just another bit of wasteful packaging in the world. If you are that bothered about contamination wash the can top or take wipes with you, but please don't add to the amount of waste that there already is in the world due to useless and unneccesary packaging.
it could be extended
the idea could be easily extended to specialise in the fields of occupational, academic, relationship, curiosity or stress due to unfulfilled desires. There will be no dearth of volunteers wh would like to comfort the visiting youth.
good for lost youth
youth who need to discoer themselves will have a good place to survive
spread it
such ideas need to be propagated and make clubs to exchange knowhow by implementing
Nature vs. Nuture
Just because someone made a great contribution to humanity it doesn't mean a clone of them will. Genes govern our physical make up, our biochemstry, our drives. They do not govern how the brain is wired up. That comes from learning and experience.
Asthma
Studies in Australia have found a strong link between asthma in children and passive smoking.
school friends
There is a slightly similar idea on a site called schoolfriends, you can look up people you went to school or worked with.
Aussie voting
In Australia, voting is compulsory, and it works ok. A few people pay a small fine rather than vote, and some people choose to vote 'informal' i.e. for no-one. (The voter can fill the slip how they want)
nature or nurture
If your theory is correct and is down to nurture then a gay gene does not exist. It follows that with proper mind training they could all be made straight.
nature or nuture
I didn't explain myself very well (250 word limit problem). What I meant to say is that we are a product of both nature and nuture. A clone of a genius is not guaranteed to be a genius though it may be more likely they are.
stick or carrot
I think it must be the 'stick' part that has raised standards..I cannot believe the mug has much to do with it!
GM modified insects
A good idea for the future!
A minus point..have you heard of killer bees? Genes were inserted into the ordinary strain to produce the killer bees which are spreading throughout the world. GM needs to be treated with caution.
Levying taxes on "bullet s"...
Presume he means cartridges, Is he aware of the mind boggling numbers involved? Does he know that cartridges can be reloaded (at home)? A smugglers dream. I still have some dated 1887 that I'm still reloading occasionally.
we might need them ...
conflict resolution
The problem is stated well, but the solution doesn't follow: the only "fair" way is to resolve it in a court of law. International Law, that is; it must be invented. It can't be said to exist in the absence of police, laws, and courts.
Causes of terrorism...
Eloquent presentation, but the causes are political, and the solutions are, broadly, political.Updating Clausewitz, War is the Default Mode of politics. Any other mode, i.e. a World

government, doesn't exist. It hasn't been invented yet.
Relocating Israel
Great idea. Even better: have a secret scholar community forge some new "Dead Sea Scrolls" proving that Jerusalem is actually on Mars. (It could be true). We'd have another "terraformed planet" very soon, and of course, the Conflicts wouldn't follow.
Renaming terrorism
Terrorism is the
Default Mode of War, or rather, our version of 21st century politics. To avoid it, create some sort of international law, with all that implies, to carry on politics without violence, as it is done within Nations.
"Terrorism"
Get real.Since Sherman's march, war against civilians has been "normal". Defining terrorists is useless. Better to provide political machinery to deal with, what is usually, valid political complaints , in a fair and impartial way.
Asteroid golf
I don't think we need to worry about this very much. It would be obvious even to a lunatic that the asteroid is just as likely to land on his own head. Ironic that the grossly wasteful "Star Wars" tech. could well save us from these asteroids.
Leaseholds
Community gradens are a great idea. Another great thing is that people save energy by growing food near their homes instead of having it trucked in from other areas.
A solution to getting land is to have landowners lease it for $1/year.
Yard of The Week Contest
We had a very successful contest year. Four new contest areas of approx 300 homes each were added. And for next year, four more are anticipated. We will joint venture with Youth Learning Insstitute, Clemson University to spread the news.
Dare to dream
I agree with Goncalo - we don't need to have a revolution, we just need to start living the dream. The problem with monetary value is that it doesn't consider the intrinsic value of something. That's why although a planned economy wouldn't be as efficient, it would be more creative!
Nuclear weapons
Its no coincidence that most of the nuclear countries are the most agressive when they carry such a big stick:
ie USA, UK; Israel; and recently India and Pakistan. Take these away and they are naked!
same idea
Dear john treadair. we have have the same idea. mine is called 'pluralist structures' see 'most new ideas' I live in Surrey BC
Government is let off the hook
Entirely feasible. My only concern is that it may work too well. The more succesful charities are, the less likely it is that the government is going to tackle the problems. 'Needs' such as the bone marrow register should be provided by the state!
Poverty
Kids from poor/deprived upbringings are the ones most likely to commit crime and at that age taxes and college have little relevance to their lives. I suspect this will simply reinforce divides that already exist, with little effect on crime figures.
Far out
This is an awesome idea in theory, only concern is the feasibility - how powerful would telescopes have to be? Hands-on hobbies that encourage practical partiipation have been in decline for decade - this kind of thing is just what we need!
Love your windmill!
I know people who resented windmills going up but became attached to them later. Let the local community say how they are decorated. Some communities have been forming cooperatives and buying their own windmills, a grant scheme would encourage this.
Politics of aid
Couldn't agree more. Aid is so highly politicized and in many cases to ensure that the donor country remains dependent. An aid program like this would go some way into making the country self-sufficient - proper progress!
Where's the soul?
I enjoy pop psychology, but despair at the practice of quantifying everything. The old cliche "follow your heart" is relevant here. Are you happy? Do you have great experiences together? Can you be the person you want to be? Love is not objective!

Reply to JohnHills
Hello John, thanks for the comment, the power of the telescope/laser is one aspect I was unsure about, I did hear though that some advert had been written on the moon with a laser (presumably visible with the naked eye)... or was that an urban myth?
more people more trouble
Even if I say it is possible I wont recommend this. The root cause of this world is over population and over exploitation of resources. Miniaturising humans will endanger their existence unless entire world is simul;taneously made smaller
The real commons
Great idea, very revolutionary although has been suggested that we could turn the upper (Lords)chamber into a kind of jury-service, randomly selected. This way, the commons is more administrative, needing political skill, but the upper chamber (in this case the real commons) is a forum for new ideas to be debated.
Community
Have you heard of the Slow City league in Italy? A similar idea to this, basically a scheme whereby towns agree to measures in which they can preserve their local identity and economy. Where I think both of these schemes are succesful is that they bring together a feeling of community - seriously lacking across (particularly) the developed world.
Criminals?
My understanding of the motoring law in the UK is that speeding is not a criminal offence - it is a civil offence (like a parking ticket). Therefore there is no problem as the people caught and fined for speeding are not 'Criminals'
Crime and Poverty?
What about all the rich people who commit crimes - like the management of Enron or the world Leaders who bomb innocent civilians, or permit/encourage illegal acts of torture, or carry out insider trading.
Unschooling Instead
Is also another book, by Mandy Koedyk Tyler.
Fair employment
Forget fair trade, buying coffee in Brazil etc., etc., there are people on your doorstep who can't get "decent" jobs, ie, charity begins at home- here lies an opportunity for the green industrial revolution; peace brothers and sisters!!
Green roofs
see: www.livingroofs.org, and visit www.birmingham-sustainablebuildings.org (not a spam catch - I promise!!) check out London Docklands they have already done this.
Degree in Charisma?
Can this be taught (yes, this is a question!)
Jobs in shops
Economic progress through retail, putting people in poor jobs in shops which neither fulfills or inspires but promotes a need to fulfill material desires. this is not progress- social community enterprises are, yet they don't get the funding needed!
Answer for Steve D.
Charisma can be developed. Click on 'contact the author' for a full explanation. However, our Freshman Program will help people become more genuine and attentive with others, by helping them know themselves better and by de-cluttering their minds.

Lottery
This is a good idea - and works. It has been used to select members of the National Lottery board for Yorkshire. People were willing to participate, even though selected at random.
Starting points
Good idea. Two possible starting points

Utsira, Norway, has Europe's first self-dependent energy system, using wind and hydrogen- www.hydro.com

Promoting Unst Renewable Energy is developing in the Shetlands - www.pure.shetland.co.uk
Responsibilities
Good idea in principle, but only a minority of a person's health depends on health care. The algorithm would need to be complex, taking account of patient responsibilities and their circumstances. Perhaps better to assess on health gain.
Hugging and stroking
The principle is right, but perhaps the focus should be on finding means acceptable to different groups. For example, what would young men find acceptable? One existing example used with some older people is dogs - stroking them reduces stress.
Could work
Could work, but then what would be these orderlies' incentive for such a menial job?
Good Idea
Do Me a favour and have a look at "Bubble Powered Turbine" (via search) to see if it could play any part in the plan...

...Do you think (know) if it could work?

Thanks
Rewarding the Childless
Those who remain childless do more for the world's long-term environmental sustainability than any other large group of people, and deserve such consideration as offered by this excellent idea!
Idea: Limit immigration to the childless and sterile?
Reinvesting Gambling Losses
Lotteries DO fit into this idea -- and better than casinos.
A state-/nation-run lottery could so act for all lottery gamblers who provide their identity. And lotteries should provide MANY more, SMALLER-amount awards, benefitting far more citizens!
Highrise Greenroofs
See the article 'Los Angeles GreenRoof' which I wrote for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's 'Birdscapes' magazine in 2002, among several other articles on solar energy and sustainable design at www.sunutility.com/html_pg/news.html.
Atomic explosion in fault lines
This is a great idea. But I think, ordinary explosives will be too weak, so maybe atomic bombs would be needed. And - maybe - not to absolutely avoid earthquakes, but to start and conduct them in a controlled way. more earthquakes=smaller earthquakes
Random promotion for equality of opportunity
how will you convince some managers who have risen to the dizzy heights of 'the power the hire and fire'? to give up that way of thinking? The culture of the company would have to change first.
www. key
there are key strokes for that, in IE just type the domain and hit Cntrl and enter and it will add the www and the .com
monitor idea
If drivers can't see if a car is stopped in front of them on the highway from poor visibility how can they possibly read a sign warning them of a pileup?
ok
those CD's cost .01 to make in bulk. The cost to ship those back to the ISP would make this not cost effective and thenthey would have to be verified working, like not scratched. It would never work.
warning signs
Most people even in foggy conditions can see the rear lights of a car ahead so not a problem. Remember they are being warned of an event about a mile ahead giving them time to slow down.
Details of operation can easily be refined!
why would anyone work?
The human nature is driven to have a better and better life. What incentive would a factory worker have to work overtime if he wasn't getting paid?
no
The waisted time and effort I would spend on saving a few penny's with this idea I would rather spend on helping the homelss and cripled. Or donating my time to world peace, or a hydrogen solution.

Bank Of America had been doing this for 5 years. oh wait I got an idea, how about a plastic card you can charge products on.

it's called www.cduniverse.com they have sample clisp of almost all the songs I ever had an interest in.
nappy laundry service
It might be worked in some countries, but not in ours. Good idea! Thanks for sharing it.
Short sited anti parent discrimination
Childlessness is good for the environment? No. In developed countries the problem is that people are having fewer children. European social security systems are under serious strain as a result of so many pensioners.
Combine Disabled and Old-age sports with mainstream
Olympics (summer & winter) should include all possible sporting events for disabled as well as old-age people, so as to bring them in societal mainstream. Currently these events are organized separate from the highly visible mainstream championships.

Won't work as its against basic science
Air will NOT enter tank. Pressure of water and air will balance out to set an equilibrium so that no motion happens.Maximum pressure in a dam is at bottom, NOT at 1/3 height.Things don't weigh 1/3 less in water; it depends on thing's relative density

An alternative approach.
The large trunked trees (with a bigger diameter) move too thus generating a lot of torque. my idea is to attach a pole along trunk and pivot just point underground attached to huge flywheel - employ a gearing effect and you have mass kinetic energy!
We all want to be loved
Grandparents who have "lost" their grandchildren (for whatever reason: divorce, relocation, estrangement) can redirect their need to "nurture & care" by joining these clubs.

Yes, Lolita, this idea can be easily extended to many other areas of life
Glass half empty or half full
I've seen this experience first hand, and as a teacher it is soul destroying trying to negotiate through it.
Mobile Phone Manufacturers pls note
The same situation.

I wish I could read my mobile phone without glasses too.

Britain is the worst in the world.......!!
What a great idea. I am sure everyone reading this will agree that Britain has the worst litter problem in the world (especially those of you who travel to other countries) and I believe the youngsters are the worst for this.
recycling
The idea is not to make money but break even. At the same time to reuse resources. If we thought this way nobody would take their empty cans, paper or plastic bottles to be recycled; their value is even less than a CD!
Recycled cans and bottles as alternative bus fares
Really good idea. All thrid world countries including India should try this or modify suitably to use the students force to collect recycleable materials and should be rewarded suitably to get fees for their conveyance/text books/school fees.

Not enough battery at the end of your day
Your idea is very complicated. Better to use "radiation cell batteries", that may be charged not only from solar energy, but by any energy source around. This source may be in your shirt, or in room, car or even in a street. It is more simple.
Honesty
It's good advice, but not practical. Why? because most people cannot or will not accept who and what they are. How many people do you know who will admit that they have prejudices, are bias, gullible, do dumb things, etc.

ID idiots
There will never be true intelligent design because machines don't have the capability to make decisions or learn from experience, both good and bad, or understand the benefits or consequences when they make their choices. Does not compute!
Great idea!
The politicians will never go for it though in the U.S. They would never give up that money for the good of the people. I do agree there should be limits to there fat cat day's though.
Want & woe, Blood in the street's
The sad reality is, Empire's fall. I say let them. Sometime's a little revolution is a good thing. The west has been top dog a long time, and we are fat & lazy and ungreatful. Tuff times make tuff people, the fittest will survive. You can count on it

beating rush hour
Good idea but I would take it a couple of steps further. If all businesses were to be open for 12 hours a day then you could stagger employees starting times so that all employees would be at work for a core period in the middle of the day

Tho' I give the submitter a strong nod for posting a tool to improve voter awareness & involvement, the sad truth is -- esp'ly in the U.S. -- that pol. races are already "reality" TV, full of contrivance, posturing, & editing. Why seek even more?

needless pileups
To do nothing is NOT an option. I rembember only a short while ago 50 vehicles involved ina pile-up on the M4 motorway with many dead. The relatives must be asking why more was not done to prevent this..only fools do not learn from tradgedies!!!
Is it enough?
The use of electricity is increasing faster than we can produce it from natural resources! I predict that the UK will have to return to nuclear power in the not to distant future? France does not appear to see a problem with using nuclear.
Eugenics does not need to be a dirty word!
It is no secret that certain genes inherited from both parents enable the offspring to follow them whether sporting or intellectual. Imagine 100% gene transfer from one parent (now experimently possible) and the prospects for humanity.
Is that all it takes?
I suppose we must get away from thinking that a specific gene causes an off/on switch to cause behaviour. A single point mutation within a gene has possibly enormous outcomes in the reading frame and maybe we should also concentrate on this?
More suicide bombs?
Wont the Israelis ever learn? Another tradegy yesterday. Tit for tat. You cannot bomb terrorists into submission..there are others to take their place! As in Northern Ireland the solution can only come from appeasement and discussion!

Re: Teaching children what the world is really like
I don't agree. Using that method will prepare children for real life but don't we actually need to change some of those things. Teach kids the way the world should be and hopefully one day, they will make it so.
Subject: The space elevator
You got that idea from Star Trek!!!! :)
Re: Creativity as a fortunate neuronal error...

what the world is really like
there are parents who don't know this stuff, and it's THEIR job to teach it...what kids need to learn is how to implement their ideas...these practical skills remain largely ignored.
Singapore political life needs rejuvenation
Singaporeans have so little interest in politics despite the government actively encouraging them to play an active role. So why not? Also, it often takes much resources to campaign for an election. This show will ease the way for the poor to participate too.

In General I Agree
...but in this case you're off. First all lawyers are not equal. Court-appointed attorneys are usually pretty bad. And while some lawyers work on contingency, this is usually only in cases where there is an emotional appeal and the possibility of big punitive damages--and many of those are on dubious grounds.

This would actually work to both sides' favor: people with marginal cases would be less likely to try to sway a jury for punitive damages, and people sued by large corporations would have an equal chance to get good representation to defend themselves--few lawyers will work for free if you're being sued rather than suing.
mentoring
I support this.

More broadly <a href="http://www.knowledgeboard.com/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=122627&d=1&h=417&f=418&dateformat=%o%20%B%20%Y" target="_blank">I train</a> 12th grade expertise in email as being about how to find your own 10 best mentors through life
Taxation / categorisation
We should punish people only if they offend, not because they happen to be born male/female/etc. This would require adequate law enforcement.. The media should avoid glorifying crime. The media must affect behaviour, otherwise why use TV adverts?
Traffic lights
Maybe it would allow people to switch off their engine if they know a long wait is likely. This would cut fuel costs and improve air quality.
accommodation
It would often be good to be able to stay near to work in the week and live at home at the weekend. It would save time and money being wasted on needless travel. It should be kept optional though.
Housing
More employers could locate to the edge of the city so that the employees do not have to travel through as much (slow) urban traffic.
Housing
I think that the Idea's title should have been "Taxing those with more than two houses", as mentioned in the article text.
Thanks, -the author.
Painting
I like the idea, especially if each one is painted in a slightly different way. Uniformity is irritating to the eye and not necessary.
Subject: Re: Teaching children what the world is really like
It's true that the transition to reality shouldn't be too fast, but a way could be found to make it palatable with animations and other means. Before you can teach kids the way the world should be, you have to show them the way it is now.
Subject: Re: Creativity as a fortunate neuronal error...
Actually, I see no evidence of a creative anything. Most people don't know it, but ALL so called discoveries, radium, etal, are the result of accident or happanstance. However, the person involved in solving the problem has to recognize it's value.
It already exists.
There are indicators on my electrical meter that show how much electricity I'm using second by second--five separate pointers that move when electricity is used, somewhat like what we see on our speedometer indicator. The numbers match my bill.
You're lucky
When I was working, I was surplused at least once every year. I was educated as an E engineer, but over the years I sold, picked peaches, worked on oil rigs, houses, plumbing--you name it--I did it.

When I left Lockheed in 89, I received a check for my accumulated vacation days I never used. I started out with 2 weeks vacation the first year, got three weeks after ten years and four weeks after twenty-five years.
3 sides to every story - POSITIVE NEGATIVE + INTERESTING
Edward de Bono promotes these ideas:

Let's consider the POSITIVE
the NEGATIVE and the
INTERESTING of any topic.

It's amazing what comes out of these discussions and it shows there are never any straightforward answers anyway.

brain mystery
In the first place, science doesn't fully understand the human brain, or how the mysterous mind fits in. We have clues about our thoughts (I've made a complete catalogue of my own), but all we can prove is that the mind and brain are aligned.
Bias is natural
If you observe humans and yourself objectively, you'll find that personal opinions or bias are part of our defensive mechanism. Set opinions are as important to a person as his arms and legs. people only discuss subjects they're familiar with.
creatively?
What your proposing can only be experienced by children/adults by solving real problems, not fabricated ones, with real consequences--job on the line, etc. So my advice to young people is to take any job you can find, learn, and move on to the next.
Get real
I can see you've never built a house. You'll find there are rules and regulations that have to be followed, and the rules are different in each city. There are already several different pre fabs on the market, and all are built by code.
This could work...
Good idea in principle, many more pre-fabricated buildings are being produced in the UK (they prefer to call them "modular" buildings as the pre-fab label suggests post-war housing in the UK!!). people could adapt buildings as needs change.
face up to facts..
I think this would be a good exercise as people would have to face up to things they did'nt want to write down, ie, realising the things they may not like about themselves, such as I know I can be greedy but don't want to admit it- make sense?
Fight Life
This subject should be expanded in many ways, to fit all the problems involved
Everyone helps everyone
I think anything that links people together is a great thing. And in this case it's to help people make informed choices at difficult times, even better!
supported benefit
I think that both points are equally valid. Some people want to benefit financially and some benefit by feeling important enough to be listened to, others would just like the benefit of a thank you. The company should support the choice of the person
Community potential
I think this is a great idea and something that could really work. I feel it's about seeing your community as a collection of people with interests and passions and therefore the community with, currently, hidded potential! fantastic!

This is such a bad idea. Genetics is all about mutation and adaptation...and clones are just copies. If anything, a breeding program would be far wiser. And as to Nat v.s Nut...see http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/04/48hours/main581771.shtml
worth to be tried by everyone
I have no doubt regarding the benefits ot this technique after attending few courses. There is a videotape (or VCD)available on vipassana mediation in Tihar jail. Its so effective that it can touch many. I wish to give a example for this. In one of the courses my friend attended, a fellow particpant (who, it seems was not serious in the course)asked my friend (his second course) what did you find in this as you come for the 2nd time. My friend replied" I liked it and hence I came" On that day (10th day of the course) that guy watched the movie on Tihar jail and at the end he is weeping. After seeing this, my friend asked him" what did you find in this that you are weeping. he replied" Sir, I wasted valuable 10 days here without serious practice and certainly i will attend one more 10 day course and get practice this technique properly.
Like this I heard many examples. So.. I suggest anybody who reads this to attend atleast one 10 day course.

Many people fear this option because of the unlikely radiation fallout and remember Chernobyl. They seem to discount a threat from the Normandy coast where 4 reactors are sited and with a prevailing SW wind poses more threat than a British operation.

Hardly anything is said about tidal power. What about the river Severn project which was all the rage some time ago.

It seems when it comes to financing an illegal war decisions are made within months but when trying to get finance for a project such as the Severn Tidal project which could supply up to 10% of our needs we plead poverty. What a waste?

adulthood
Yes I think this is a good idea. I think the right to vote is one of the more important 'freedoms' or in this case responsibilities. Your argument went a bit pear shaped by reverting to the out dated patriachial language of referring to all humans
adulthood (2)
as masculine. Unless of course you meant to only apply these 'freedoms' to males, in which case I withdraw my support for your idea.
poverty
Isn't this what taxes are for? and isn't a flat tax (ie 1%)what's called regressive? Wouldn't it be better to call for an increase in taxes, with a higher percentage in the higher income bracket and monitor government to ensure that they are spent
poverty(2)
in a way that eliminstes poverty - ie free education for all. Get rid of those rich bastards in govt that don't give a toss about everyone else for a start.

Equality between sexes
The idea is meant to apply universally. The use of patriarchal terms is a legacy of our English langauage. I used it to simplify the wording of the idea, and not to express a political statement.
Reply to "JUST HOW MANY R THERE?"
Sufficient, esp if you are one of them yourself. Today increasing numbers of young adults develop maturity well before their predessors. Do we risk stopping another potential Bill Gates from starting a project because he is "underaged"? I believe not

History was not my best subject. The dates made it boring, but I did enjoy one teacher who gave vivid details. Your idea is valid, but only part of the solution. How it's taught needs improvement, hands-on and living history are much more fun.

Accelerate Learning
Indeed, jobs are one route to learning problem-solving. I propose that the kids solve real problems, of their own, and present the solutions in a creative way at the end of the month-long-camp. I am not suggesting the problems be invented, but rather discovered with honest reflection.

This sounds like a great idea, and I'm sure that some one out that had already had done it, of something similar to it. In my opinion, you could leave the camera in operation for as long as you wanted, you would get the same result as everyone else.
Truth Council
What is Truth?Truth is different depending on what part of the world you are from.To us, Al Quieda is bad, to Al Quieda we are bad, which one is truth? By the way Yasser Arafat is one of the Peace Prize winners, do you want him deciding truth? Nope!!
Parent Licenses
I concur with the proposal but would drop the "incentive". We pay for permits and licenses to drive, build, hunt, fish etc. I think the $100 "fee" would adequately cover parenting classes taught by the Catholic churches who encourage large families
History Backwards
I love history, and to forget history, we are bound to repeat it. Maybee our focus should be on the teachers not doing a well enough job engaging the students attention. How critical it is for the students to know why they even have a 21st century.
Social Invention
Margie named 3 way different types of people: common criminal; paedophile; terrorist. As for the first one, I might agree w/ her, maybee. But for the last two, these people need to be locked up and the key needs to be thrown away forever. Then teachthem
Discipline
My wife is a high school teacher in the Chicago Land School School District. Behavior is a serious problem, I say, do whatever it takes to make the kids and teachers safe and a better learning environment.
Adultery
You did not mention any other common factors, such as: early balding, hairy chests, men who speak spanish. What a stupid study, very unscientific, where is the "control" group, the one where all the males have large balls and small balls? DUMB!!!
Sign Language
My sister teaches sign language. It has come it handy many times. She interprets @ church, helps at stores, etc. I think that this is a great idea, you would be surprised how varried sign language "signs"can be between 2different people, butitcanbedone.
No Money
For most of history people lived w/ out money, they traded, goods, cattle, etc. What this ends up being is a "survival of the fittest", if you don't have any "goods" to offer anyone, your not worth anything, so your as good as dead. Sound like today?
participative government
Why start up yet more bureaucracies. Isn't it time to have a direct democracy? Much of the revenue-eating issues could be eliminated.
Cloning
Who is great? To some Adolf Hitler was great, while to others (most) he is hated. Who decides on who is great enough to be one day cloned, and if one person is not good enough, but another person is.Who decides who is "good enough" or is not good enough!
Children
Our children need one on one time w/mom and dad, not w/ community centers and old people that don't have jobs. There is no easy answer, but to say that parents will no longer be raising their children is an outrage. It sounds like one big orphanage.
Clear windmills?
Why paint them? The least obtrusive way to make windmills is to use clear plastic for as much of the construction as possible.
Ethics
Ethics vary from person to person, we do have an "ethics comity" in Washington, on which, "Teddy" has sat for the past decade or so, this is a joke, ethics, yea right. Each person must determine their own morales and live by them, some don't have any
database mathcing people to causes
another interesting example is http://www.nabuur.com (goal is to assist communities in underdeveloped countries)
SCRAP STORES
There are various charitable organisations such as The Children's warehouse and PERCY in the NE which take unwanted materials from businesses and manufacturers (including stationary) and distrubute this to their members. This is a local solution.
Forest Dwellers
This sounds wonderful, however, for the majority of America that lives in cities, the thought of a "forest garden" is simply out of the question.
Not to mention the cost involved in planting and buying all of these trees and plants, expensive!!
Driving
Please pardon my ignorance, but what are "Lorries"?
Shelters
Your not the first one to come up w/ this idea. Missionaries all over the world have had this dream for years, only one problem, no one wants to pay for it.
Lorries
Lorries are: Trucks, large vehicles, etc.
Lorries
In that case, I only see a few things wrong with this: First of all, at least here in the "States", the large trucks do not cause any of the "rush hour", plus, most warehouses, stores are closed at night, thus causing logisical problems all around.
Knife Block
I like your idea, however, not really for the idea of "home invasion" or something like that.
I envision it being useful just as much for child safety, as well as what you mentioned.
FAQ question
Can you post something that explains the percent boxes with each idea? What are they for and how do the ideas get rated?
This is already here.
There is already a system in testing where your mobile phone will BE your debit card. You will wave the phone over a portable device. Dial in to recharge.
simply not enough!
At present 'fog' warning lights on motorways tell you there is fog. So what? You don't even need a sign to tell you that! You need real time information of crashes or stationary traffic ahead which will determine your current speed.
Choice
Good question and creates ethical questions. The surrogate mother should be well screened as she would provide the nurture part. Maybe a poll could be arranged! Certain undersirables must be excluded. Those chosen must benefit society as a whole.
Mapping the community
This is a great concept and one that the Tutor/Mentor Connection supports by using GIS technology to create maps showing where tutor/mentor programs are in Chicago. The challenge for local residents is obtaining the technology to map community assests, share the information, and maintain the data on a continuing basis. That requires dollars/talent that most inner city organizations find difficult to obtain on a regular basis.
Re. scrap stores
You can find a piece about scrapstores on the Global Ideas Bank here: <A HREF="http://www.globalideasbank.org/site/bank/idea.php?ideaId=4412">Scrapstores as an alternative to expensive craft materials</A>
outsourcing pensioners
A similar scheme could be applied to say India, Pakistan or the West Indies. Many of the early immigrants in the UK may wish to return to their homelands and see long lost relatives with the priviso that they could come back to UK at some time.
hygiene
I am not too familier with this implement..but if metal could it not be wiped with a disinfected cloth?
Query
Do you think if we removed too much weight from the earth, the earth would be put out of orbit, and all life would be destroyed?
unsightly windmills
They could all be eradicated from view if they operated in the horizontal plane where the height could be as low as 20 feet.
In addition 3 or 4 could be stacked on 1 spindle saving much space.
germ transmision
I'm an RN for a busy med/surg ward, and we use alcohol swabs, which are proven to reduce transmission of germs in this setting, when used appropriately...after each use.
Eyesore

Cover the tower/pillar in wooden clap boarding to make them look more like farm objects.

And/or

Train a fast growing creeper up the tower, Russian vine or Virginia creeper should do it. They would then change colour with the seasons as well.
Urgency?
If its urgent then stand.
The solution is really to have more standing room on public transport with seats only for elderly, pregnant, infirm and children. Then everyone gets on not just the wealthy.
Dangers
This has been considered as a way to get rid of nuclear waste. The danger is a crash on launch could scatter the waste across half the globe.
Excellent Idea
When I have done litter picks it soon seems to inspire others to join in. Showing that you care makes others care do something with their own feelings about litter.
Maybe
I don't think you should pay for it because that will eliminate people who may need their voice to be heard. I think if it was a bit like jury service it would represent people better. However you need some experienced members too.
the birds
Wind turbines kill some birds and this will only encourage them to try to nest on them or forage for nesting material or food from them. The anti camp plays this up and opposite for the pro's. But you dont want to kill too many in an ecosystem.
Add Rickshaws to it
I fully support the idea and would suggest add cycle rickshaws imported from India. These are non polluting public transport for the poor. More usage will result in better designs. Let us spread the movement.
have more such products
Rape is the most degrading of human acts. Unfortunately only women are the targets. I saw a spray of chillies that women could use when in distress. More such products should be brought in market. Why not an orange smoke signal that will automaticalr
a global idea?
sorry to be critical, but what if everyone did this?
It's been done!
Great idea and pretty simple but powerful. An australian inventor has done this (see http://www.abc.net.au/newinventors/txt/s1076405.htm)
another resource

Or SMS?
I've been working on an idea to create an SMS service where you could use a mobile phone to SMS the car rego to a data base - but i like this more - just send your SMS to a friend! Saved me a lot of thinking.
Integrating gifted children's parents
There is too much ignorance about gifted kids. The first integration should be a "Welcome" sign on the school gate (excuse the pun) telling gifted kids' parents to come and introduce their gifted child fully. It would save much wasted time and effort
I Can just see it
I am voting for the Coke man this year, and I'll perhaps keep Mercedes as a back-up vote. Maybe BP will lose the by-election, but Cardy will keep us warm as we run through to the election day.
time release for parents
this is essential, and would be a welcome addition in many schools, as my own experience parallels your idea....however, i have been successful because i found a great match with a teacher!....many teachers are still resistant volunteer in class.
wealth distribution
Or how about looking at it more collectively, rather than just individual businesses. The maximum income (100% tax rate above this) can only be 15 x the minimum wage in the country.
Prescribed Drug Addiction Today
my mother was addicted to valium for ten years, and I found out from a source which I can't remember, that 10% of houswives were addicted to it. I wonder what is the figure for Prozac these days? see [www.ecotort.gn.apc.org] for a possible cure......
birds
site the windmills near airports...if they manage to kill the birds it will make it safer to fly!
land reclamation
Singapore has reclaimed 40 square miles around its coast. You could put a town the size of Birmingham on this. With our land being heavily used this system could be used with John Prescotts land grab and massive house building.
food rambling
This sounds very nice on a small scale, but if taken too far, it could deprive native wildlife of needed food. Walks should include info about leaving some for birds and other wildlife, and for plant regeneration.
that is so true
While this idea is brilliant in its common sense, don't hold your breath waiting for the bureaucrats to adopt such a forward thinking approach.
Hear, hear
A testiment to how millions of people can be suckered by a con artist. This guy should be in jail, not mingling with heads of state. And if those heads of state allow this sham to continue, they too should be thrown behind bars for complicity.
...on the other hand
This IS a global think-tank, so it may do the vitamin-D deficient crustaceans well to listen to the people.
spelling correction
testament, not testiment.
Friendly Horn
This actually made me chuckle out loud. Cute idea. I like it.
Reebok Running Sisters
I think the RRS network is fantastic. I was a member in High Wycombe in the early 90s, and went from never having run for a bus to completing a half marathon - slowly, but I did it! Would love to find a group in Manchester if anyone knows one??
No More homelessness
I am a realtor and I work with the homeless. This is a great idea. Please let me know when you are up and running. Maybe our shelter can be one of the beneficiaries.
We're all connected
This site is a great idea. I too just happened on it. I searched 'idea' and your site came up. I will let others know. This site makes you feel connected.
Do-able
D-able, but it won't be easy. We first need to show people why money is an impediment more than a facilitator of progress. We need to show that there are other incentives other than money: love for humanity, love for each other, and the common good.
recycling credits?
Do you think the recycling credit consultation that is ongoing at the moement will make a differece now that they are looking to include re-use? or is the material generally from commercial sources and therefore not open to this income source?
naming authority?
who actually gets to name them just now? And how is this done? I agree with the idea and wondered ho to pass it on to the authorities
goals
Many of the richest men in society are driven by wealth (as this means power). To put a cap on this would stifle many entrepenurs once the limit is reached. That is why a low tax economy is always more successful!
less tax for saints
Criminals do not pay ANY tax on their ill gotten gains!
London overflow
They thought of this many years ago. They built a new town up the M1 called Milton Keynes.
dog fouling
I'm all in favour of dog restrictions. I would ban them from all parks. Also to have a muzzle and to wear a 'nappy' in public.
Drought in third world countries
very thought provoking, where will funding come from. reply to Dave_doniese@juno.com
StrawBale -- UK
Tiny correction: yours may be the first MODERN strawbale cabin in the UK. Strawbale structures from over 500 yrs ago are still in use in parts of England & Wales.
Keep up the good work! I hope many others in the UK & the USA follow your example!
Help with home projects
Yes. This could also be operated by LETS Groups
.... you can check out this website too.
http://www.kindredspirit.co.uk/ARTICLES/4027_lets.asp
Owners responsibilities
Responsible Dog owners can clean up the streets! How??
While walking their dog - carry poop bags and collect it.
Or purchase dung beetles to help recycle the dog poo.

Council provided Dog Poo Bins and registered dog owners made to clean up.

Help with home projects
There is a web site which encourages the swapping of wants and resources run by the Scarman Trust. Free.
www.candoexchange.org
Take a look its just had a makeover.
tax breaks for good citizens
excellent idea - you could also add "pension points" when we retire to law abiding citizens - or deduct points for criminals.
A question of investment
It's a beautiful vision but I guess the question is where the money comes from. Even with energy efficiency in the long term, the start up costs would be huge. The UK government doesn't allocate a lot of money for old people!
DNA
Did I dream it or did I read suggestions for a DNA database of dogs? That would probably eradicate the problem overnight. Actually there is also a problem with dogs urinating on parks. That must pose hygiene probems? Especially with children about.
Friendly Horn
Perhaps you could have an array of dashboard buttons ranging from "I'll just go and flog myself!" to "Asshole!!!!"
dogs poo
If we took up your idea UKJohn our laboratories would be inundated with dogs poo!
Nah
I think we can find a way to use our waste (even nuclear waste). We have to make our way of life a closed cycle like nature itself. Waste = Food. Although, I think we should launch Bush and his neo-con friends toward the sun. Just kidding. :)
Scholarship
Instead of a tax break, how about a college scholarship? That way, poor students could go to college. Most crimes are committed by people with little education, so it would reduce crime even further.
Parents' fears
I used to work with kids, and I was not allowed to touch them because if I did, parents would be afraid that I was molesting them. How would this be any different?
The other half?
It's only boys who are required by their peers to avoid all things pink like the plague. What would you do to girls who misbehave?
Explaining the issues
Children need the issues explained by their parents. The parents would explain them in such a way that children will vote the same way as their parents. This will mean that parents with more children will have more political power.
Friendly Horn
In NYC it used to be that how one used the horn one had communicated a range of things: a short light toot or two to catch attention (and wave someone on) or a medium honk to warn, or a great, hard, HONK! that meant #@!*#. In Boston they think honking at all is rude -- they prefer to cut you off without notice. (In NY, a cutoff would be preceded by the medium warn honk...) Overall, I like your idea. maybe one horn: high for distress/alarm/warning, soft/low for please/thankyou/your turn.
banning money
id cards should be issued to those that want them ,in exchange the posser no longer deals in money .they would have acess to everything via the id card.
but would also have acess to areas refused if they comit a crime a a rule of the no money sceme
no money
it would be a cases of barter, everybody would be intitled to everything
incentive on no money
everybody would do a minium number of hours each week.in what ever trade they decide or they would not be included
interest
unbelivably no that many show a interest in a no money world.they must be insane
TELL AS MANY PEOPLE ABOUT THIS SITE AS POSSIBLE
muzzle and nappy
I'd prefer most people to wear muzzles instead, dogs are only doing whats natural; its the owner's responsibility to clean up after them, so if they don't do it now, they're not likely to put a number plate on their dog to help them get caught!
bush deterrence
Its an intriging concept, but is only going to help the relatively few in society who are lucky enough to have a house with or surrounded by a garden.
supermarkets
Wouldn't this scheme just pass more buyer power to the supermarkets who are out-competing the newsagents? We would be left with far less consumer choice, and find the same bland fruit/veg whether we shop at supermarkets or local independent stores.
spiritual retirement
If there are golfing and gay retirement communities, why not one for spiritual seekers? When I retire in 6 years, I want to move to a place where I can hike and meditate and share intelectual conversations with like-minded folk. Hope Daniel's idea manifests itself.
Spelling
Wy not also u's a spelng systm we'r yu cut al letrs not pronaunsd and chanj al wrds with unusual pronaunsiashns? American [nashnalitys dont chanj] studnts of German cn spel 6 tyms betr in German thn in English. AND WY NOT ONLY U'S CAPS LYK TH ROMANS?
More than one vote and less than one vote
A system of ranking would make votes count much more. You could vote for one candidate as "most favorable" and another as a 2nd choice. Even better, a "minus vote" could be cast to say that you do NOT support a candiddate.
Absence of fathers is the main cause
The # of boys with no positive role model and only the media as a guide is the problem. Better to reinforce through mentoring fatherless boys than making people raise kids right. How could that be enforced, anyway?
top idea
I for one like being able to use Charlie in letters, but often use my initial because I feel I will be taken more seriously if I am assumed wrongly to be a man. My partner and I are Dale and Charlie, Dale's the lad, and I'm Charlotte. I like that.
yess
My fella is rubbish at eating veg and i have to force feed him multi vitamins or sneak fresh herbs into his food. However you can have too much of some vitamins. Top idea though.
hours worked
I do not quite see the point..if you are taxed yearly then how is the tax man able to see the number of hours worked, unless you submit a weekly time sheet to him which can be open to fraud?
road pricing
An alternative less bureaucratic solution for car emissions would be to levy a huge fuel tax on vehicles..the UK has done this but needs more until the pips squeak without upsetting the motoring lobby too much.
sex crimes
If sex is what they're after why not give it to them. Brothels should be legalised with no lower age limit on the punters!
Re: hours worked
Do you not see the point or do you not see how it would work? The point is to not "punish people for working harder". The point is to encourage hard work. People who make more per hour live a beter life than people who make less per hour.
Re: Re: Hours worked
For instance, if you earned 1M dollars in 2004 and you worked 1 hour, your doller per hour ratio would be 1M. You did not need the money very much, because you did not see a need to work more than 1 hour. Therefor you should be taxed at a higher rate
Re: how is the tax man
I see two assertions 1. That it would be difficult to figure out how many hrs someone worked in a year 2. That the system would be open to fraud. Re #1 It would be easy Re #2 how would this be open to fraud any more than the current system?
The thing is...
I have already thought of a similar idea, but many Jews I know don't like the idea because Israel is "the Holy Land." What we need to do is convince the Israelis that it's a good idea. Any ideas on how to do this?
Population change?
What would happen if a country of a million people grew or shrank in size? Ethiopia's fertility rate is 5.5 children per family, and at the other extreme, Italy's is only 1.2.
On going project
In the book of Thiaoouba Prophency, it was decribed that money is the curse of human society. About "no money society" has been discussed extensively in www.thefreedomofchoice.com
and
http://www.goldenplanetforum.com/
on going research...
This has been studied check:
http://www.thiaoouba.com
A special forum for people who have read the spiritual realm of Thiaoouba Prophency and The freedom of choice has been created http://www.goldenplanetforum.com
the answer is...
The asnwer is simply looking at the guru's aura around of its head. The guru should have a yellow halo around his/her head. Of cause you need to learn how to see aura.
More information:
http://www.thiaoouba.com/teach.htm
Hmmm... and yes
I'm not sure that state-sanctioned pedophilia is the way to go, and besides, brothels are for sad-cases. (though there are a lot of sad cases, so maybe they have their use. As long as there's no sex-slavery) And yes, I agree with you Mark, totally.
What i meant was...
I agree with you Mark in that we should reinforce through parenting of fatherless boys, but since what i propose can't possibly hurt, why not try it? It's not up to parents to decide if they raise ethical human beings, because it affects others.
not too much emphasis
I appreciate your concern lui, but as I've said before, instead of essays every year, they may instead be written in one year of junior high, and a follow up into senior high and college if necessary. These essays may then be analyzed for trends.
And another thing
Point taken, Linhy. To Kwickham, rape is often not about sex but about humiliating and hurting women. It's a disgusting power-play where these so-called "men" show themselves to be the freaks they are. So we have to target aggression against females.
Population
The world population and each and every countries population is in my opinion unsustainable, having degrees in Applied Science and Communication I understand that politicians cannot state the facts that the earth is growning under the pressure of the
population growth
must reduce so the population is sustainable before it is too late
Hours Worked
Taxing "hours worked" must somehow include hours that professionals spent in college making $0, unpaid sales hours for consultants, unpaid business development hours... That's why I'm not sure it will be accurate.
Sign language
Very young kids pick can learn sign language along with speech & writing without too trouble. If sl teaching started in first year, there might be no need to continue formal teaching for most pupils beyond year 3 or 4. All would benefit.
Password hell
I totally support this - I have lost count of the number of passwords I have of different formats for different sites or applications. Impossible to remember all of them, so they get written down - how secure?!
Parenting License
Parental responsibility is at least as serious as the responsibility driving a car. Free classes should be offered, and a reasonable fee ($100) charged for those taking a test. Tax breaks for dependent children would be available for licensees only.
no money living
the only real problem i can see in instaling a new system is that the population would be to keen to start i feel it would take alot of arranging ,i have many ideas and i believe they would work .and if people are serious i would try to get it going
LOVE IT!
This is one amazing idea. I think it could change the world. Thank you!
Brilliant!
The Gun buyers law is a riot! I'd love to see this idea fruition in my lifetime. HAHAHA!!! I'm still laughing. I love the concept!
re:Village control of right to hunt elephants
This is a great idea, but at the same time there needs to be increasing emphasis on ecotourism. Also a realease from debt for poor countries would go a long way to improving living standards, which improves health and education. People who aren't desperate have more choices and the environment becomes a more important issue.
re:Double your vote's power in three simple steps
We have 'ranking' in Australia. Preferential voting - see http://www.eca.gov.au/systems/single/by_category/preferential.htm
Putting some people in the last box is very satisfying, although there is much competition on my form for that box.
re:Register a 'lifetime' vote in elections
Something about this idea makes me uneasy. We have compulsory voting (Australia), and I think it is a good idea. I don't support the current government, but most people do (inexplicable, but there you go). Judging by overheard conversations on the bus, I believe it means that people think and talk about voting more.
re:Posting up laws and constitutions for discussion
A good idea, but not an easy one. Wouldn't 'laws, constitutions, bills or rights, charters' be written in legalese and be difficult for most people to understand? Also, full disclosure of all connections between the people proposing the bills etc and any company would be good.
re:Land reclamation: using landfill to save the coastline
I'd want to know more about this idea - what are the environmental impacts. Could erosion see some of this waste landfill floating about in the ocean?
re:Green Letters - children discussing environmental issues by post
Perhaps, on the language issue, children studying other languages could write in those languages if any enterprising language teachers wanted to get double value.
re:Use a simplified Latin for a trade language
What's wrong with Esperanto?
Too complicated
Esperanto is too complicated for most people to learn. My plan is to make a new Latin that is as simple as possible.
hold on a minute.....
A well-intentioned idea, but isn't it a bit fascist for the authorities to define and police the values that parents communicate to their children? (freedom of speech? freedom of thought? freedom of religion?)
marriage certificates
The best solution I have come across is to have a fixed term marriage certificate after which time either party can walk away from the marriage. If children are involved a satisfactory solution is also necessary.
re;Bridging life and death
The author has alot to say in argument against traditional linear thinking, that is,"theres more to it than we die and then what" He makes very good points. As a woman who's in love with her dead husband, I'd add molecules of emotion bear some links.
Why nobody vote on my idea
?????????????????Anybody there?
Barmy
Why not go the whole hog and just use numbers? Or better still the same number, wouldn't want anyone to feel that their lower number was superior.

And what do you mean that the sexes are irreconcilably different? Have you not noticed that some of us manage to live together quite happily with members of the opposite sex.

Get a grip.

Sorry, but that's hogwosh
Sorry Siaffa, but I'm right. Freedom from violence is more important - WAY more important - than freedom to commit violence. Hence, parents should have no freedom at all to let their kids think otherwise. Remember, innocents may suffer. That's all.
global avail. of journals
Whilst I concur that online and free access to scientific/scholarly journals has its very strong points, I do suggest that simply making such available to all does not in fact increase "knowledge." We suffer a surfeit of "knowledge" which I think is actually only data, valid and not, and doesn't become "knowledge" until it is synthesized/understood/inegrated. It reminds me of pharmaceutical companies doing direct marketing to consumers, who then rush to their doctors and tell them what medicine they want to be on...whether they understand its usefulness to them or not. Perhaps the idea would be made further useful if there were some way to post "reviews of the literature" from both or all sides of the scholarly debates in each area of inquiry...and who would write/fund them?
quiting passive smoking
sound comments,i have been putting up with other peoples smoke for years.I am a boiler engineer by trade and some of the homes that i work in were terrible,i could hardly breath with the smoke, but not anymore, thanks.
Thats not the point
What matters in religion (or life, really) is what's TRUE. We need truth, not a random religion to make us feel better.

Another problem: it would be a MAJOR opportunity for an evil person to take over the world and screw it up.
Manufacturers
The main cause of garbage is packing material in the products you buy. The cure isn't personal awareness but the manufacturers who create this packaging. Try putting all the packaging in a separate bag from the rest of your garbage instead.
Rain Generating Pyramids
Why would they put these rain generating pyramids right next to the Nile in the most fertile are in Egypt, The Nile Valley which has most of the time all the water it requires and more? Surely the middle of the desert would have been better.
Social Innovations Awards 2004
All great ideas.

A little biased to high tech.
Manufacturers manufacture what people buy!
I disagree that manufacturers bear primary responsibility. It's easy enough to choose not to buy overpackaged products-- personally I buy almost all of my food in bulk in reusable containers. <3
another solution
Visually impaired readers ought to try the Opera browser, which has a font size button built in!
why use regular names at all?
I think it's astoundingly uncreative how people reuse the same names over & over. What's the point of naming someone if you just name them the trendy name of the moment? I think a better solution would be to explore new names with new connotations.
but can it be legislated?
The problem is that people who aren't sensitive to gender issues aren't likely to be made so by a class-- especially a mandatory one. There are a lot of good ideas which cannot successfully be legislated, & I think this is one of them. <3
it would be very difficult to apply fairly
The problem with this system would be that there is an incentive for (at least some) people to "work" more hours than they actually need to in order to do their work, either by lying or by sitting around doing nothing. <3
i'm not impressed
Wait, so it's more environmentally friendly to telecommute with an SUV in the garage than with a hybrid?? (This idea sounds to me like a way for corporations to sneak out of making real changes.) <3
Esperanto is already in use!
There might be some problems with Esperanto, but it's certainly easier than LATIN! :P Besides, switching to a different universal language would mean throwing away the work of millions of Esperanto speakers. Give Esperanto a chance. <3
Stress Code
Evidence has been mounting that common business practices can damage their employees, especially change and bullying. Why let them keep on leaving society to pick up the pieces? They exist because we exist, not the other way around.
Security
Nobody in history has destroyed the faith and respect in women was The Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. She was mercifully spared the Brighton IRA bombing as security even though the security was insuffucient.
More security
MI5 set a dangerous precedent when Stella Rimington bared all and went public.
Now the present incumbant Eliza Manningham-Buller must fear for her safety with the terrorist threats. Richard Dearlove must be glad he did not go public.
prescription med. recycle
I thought of this years ago when I began treatment for a chronic illness. The pharmacy wouldn't take them back; even my support group didn't want them. Liability considerations kept all agencies I contacted from interest in participation.
Maybe a good idea in another world, no this one.
already being done!
this idea was succesfully developed on a national scale by AquAid last decade: www.aquaid.co.uk - does this mean competition comprimising the ultimate beneficiaries?
economies of scale?
but what about smaller organisations who (may) not have the capacity to enforce these, despite the increased need for them in smaller groups?
re:Places of worship as collection centres for excess medicines
I think you would have to test everything that came through to make sure it was what it was supposed to be. It would probably be too labour intensive unless you streamlined it to one or two drugs and had a very simple test.
Garbage carrying experiment to increase understanding of problem
Great idea, but rather than everyone doing it, which isn't practical - why not have it as a school project. Most people don't change lifelong habits, (and anyone you got to actually do this would be on the road to change anyway), - change will come through educating the next generation.
re:Wheat-burning stove
Sounds good, but it's still burning something - seems more economically sound than environmentally sound.
re: esperanto too complicated
I had a look at Esperanto the other day after reading your idea - doesn't seem too complicated. I picked up a rudimentary understanding of it in half an hour, and I am very ordinary in the learning stakes. But if you think you can do something even easier, go ahead. Your idea has merit, but I think it has already been met with Esperanto.
re: Encourage the use of gender-neutral names
I don't think gendered names encourages sexism - we have to have some texture to our lives. I do like the idea of teaching children about gender-neutral names and reducing possible ridicule.
re: Kidscard
Bullies would just get your child to buy them something. It is not a way around this problem, but it might help you keep your child healthy. Assuming it is a healthy school 'canteen' (tuck shop) with no junk food and they can only spend money there.
re:Knights of Gaia Academy: saving the world
Great idea. Education is the answer. I'm not fussed on the 'knights' bit of the name, but the rest of it says what it is. Hope you have lots of students.
re:Human cloning to keep great individuals for posterity
Stupid idea. The idea of cloning animals is to reproduce physical traits. You want Einstein's nose then go ahead. Clones are not going to be the same people as these 'great individuals' - genetics only plays a small part in what makes someone great. You would be wasting your time and if there was some way of imprinting these clones with the thought-patterns of great people I would still want to leave some things up to chance in life and the next generation of 'greats'.
re:Cats and cats' caretakers co-housing
Nice idea, but on the whole I think it would be hell living with that many cats around - the humans would spend all their time breaking up fights and many cats would be very unhappy. In my experience cats like something they can call their own or their family's own. Maybe something along this line could be done, but forget the communal space for the cats.
re: Everlasting cloth created using organic material
Most people in Western society don't actually wear out their clothes and our governments seem addicted to having rampant consumerism as the driving force behind our economies .... but, I should still be interested to see the advertising campaign for this product.
re: Magazine recycling for more readers
I take already read magazines with me to the doctor and dentist and leave them there. Hair salons are another place.
Posterity
I have suggested a progress meter - this would be a way of highlighting the ideas presented here; if we demonstrate that progress is not what it is cracked up to be then there is a greater chance people will be accept the need to change the future
religious places of worship as collection centers
Due to heightened security concerns, space and mroberts-1951 have raised valid points. Still some medicines intablet and capsule form come packaged individually in foil packs. These may still be used.
Drinking in France
Listening to people here in France suggests that drinking amongst the young is becoming a problem in France. The idea that it hasn't been a problem is also a myth as new drink driving restrictions are showing in halving road deaths. Statistics?
Fags
Great idea! Its also worth noting though that the biggest impact in France recently was the increase in duty that provoked protests among the small 'tabacs' across the country.
Award-winners and nominees
Fair point Evan. I would add that the nominees list, which I will post up shortly, had more variety, including a pub that gives profits to local charities, an alternative science centre for research, and eco-taxing companies that use animals in their ads....
On this subject
There is a campaign to encourage people to <A HREF="http://www.embracewind.com">Embrace the revolution</A> of wind power, and part of it focuses on their beauty: see <A HREF="http://www.embracewind.com/photo.html">the photo exhibition</A>
Suggest title change
This is a great one! My only suggestion is to change the title to something more explanatory, like "Mushroom spores in chainsaw oil to speed forest regeneration."
Practical Thinking
Fantastic idea and very feasible if the greedy, narrow minded politicians and corporate fatcats would take the initiative. I bike or walk to work everyday and I'd love to wake up in a clean, pollution-free, quiet environment like Groningen. Peace.
Author's Comment
Wow, I never thought my idea would generate so much discussion.

P.S. Mungojelly, I like your idea. Jon Brooke, I meant to say that this custom teaches a belief that the sexes are more different than they are. Sorry about the confusion.
the sound of names
I seriously doubt the validity of this research.
As an active member of HotorNot, I know that names are not shown on either the "Rate Me" screen, or the "Meet Me" screen. So attractiveness cannot be based on name sound!
Seriously flawed research!
Reality check
Luis - all men are not rapists! It would take a seriously emotionally unsettled man to rape, and writing an essay or two in school isn't going to sort out deeply seated psychological issues. Loving parents don't need to be forced to raise kids well.
Solar Energy Usage
Absolutly Agree!! Would love to see more of this in every country as well. Possibly tie this to the assistance programs as must provide site for developing solar/wind power in the country receiving.
Global ideas
Thank you for giving me an outlet for these ideas I've had for years.
Taipan60@aol.com
between your ears?
What about great sportsmen/women who can never be surpassed ? Cassius Clay, Beryl Burton to name 2. Some non sporting greats only appear once per millenium..eg Newton; Einstein; Beethoven; Chopin, etc. We dont know the characteristics just hereditary
'Embrace the revolution'
Good website!
The problem with windmills is that many are placed in AONB. By themselves may be nice to look at but do not complement the picuresque views but only detract.. one reason surely for siting them out at sea.
windmill design
There is an article in the Times of 19th Oct (supp) which considers the design of windmills. An imaginery radial design is shown which uses less operating space. We should be looking in this direction and not think in the box!
Land reclamation
You are quite right if rubbish is dumped directly into the sea. That is why I said structures should be put in place. The fact that Singapore have reclaimed land from the sea so successfully should be investigated.
There are many different sign languages in the world - all are as different to each other as Japanese is to Bulgarian. Talk of an international sign language is no different to a debate on an international spoken language like Esperanto. If hearing people
Deaf people were banned from using sign language in schools. For those who have posted comments on this subject, I strongly suggest visiting the BDA website and reading a book by Dr Oliver Sacks called Seeing Voices. A great read.
water room
can you tell me how you will get all that water up there, you would have to keep it on a space station, solve those two problems and you might have somthing, look for the next thing hevier than air,but lighter than water.
space elevator
first of all you rely on other peoples progress,go through the process yourself, plus have you forgot that the earth is rotating, what happens if that rope snags, and remember MEIR, total waste of time.
finding ET
listen mate thats not going to happen,do it yourself, build a laser beam,a very strong one,and you send a message, you might come up with somthing that jodrell bank cant.
cosmetic moon
is that the best you can do,get some sleep and wake up with a better idea,if not you go and pit a smile on the sun.
release ideas
so if i did what you said, how would i make a living, nothing on this planet is for free, someone will want to make money out of it ,why not me.
big idea
going to check your web site out sounds good
patents for royalties
this is a very good idea,it will stop big companys stealing ideas from small people like you and me,and will stop many a good idea going to the grave, right with you on this one.
grants
i understand where your comming from, but what are YOU going to do about it,someones got to make a start.GO FOR IT.thousands will back you.
patent ripoff
WELL DONE SIR,i never knew that,i will keep this in mind.
B.A.I.
I would like to know more,do you have email, let me know asap.
Cornersheds.com
First ask why you need a shed. Our lives are better suited for storing gear we really want, not a place to hoard our rubbish.
Feng Shui says LHS is our prosperity corner; RHS is our relationship corner.
Be very careful what you store there.
Seeing is believing!
Why not display "IS THIS YOUR RUBBISH" exhibit in a perspex rubbish bin at a Shopping Centre. It may shock some people into thinking more about it when they are actually about to buy their groceries.

Go further than cities
This is a very broad idea - which is what this site is all about. I can see this being extended to politics, society, law, art, etc. Of course the issue become the level of participation and corruption of the process...
Just tax breaks?
Are tax breaks the best incentives to a city - I assume the city council would be the target here. Some further consideration of how this would be manifested would be interesting. Governments are self interested. What is in it for them?
Nice idea - Name change
I like the idea - we need to be careful of creating a divided world which could increase conflict. There is also some contradiction in the trade priorities.
The name might be too similar to the UN. consider UD Peoples or Council of DN
vehicle mileage taxes
This method is currently in force within the UK but in a much simplified form. Huge taxes are added to each litre of fuel bought at the pump.
failed research
A good idea as it will stop scientists trying to re-invent the wheel so to speak.
In my opinion a worse crime is to see articles in newspapers saying a cure for so-and-so building up false hopes to a sufferer.
brightening rainy days
peoples' reactions to bright colors can vary according to individual preference and their passing moods. I agree;we do need more color but the problem is to introduce it without making some poor souls "see red"!
Community Energy
This is already happening via Baywind Energy Co-operative and its offshoot Energy4All. See www.baywind.co.uk and www.energy4all.co.uk.
Working Assets
<a href="http://www.workingassets.com/">Working Assets</a>, a US-based telephone company, has a similar idea for their monthly statements. Customers can choose to "round-up" their monthly phone bill to the nearest dollar.

A practical solution
A recent idea has been posted which can show the possibilities. See 'A solar cooker for 35,000 meals'
solar street lights
Sounds feasible! In fact I am beginning to see some applications on British roads and motorways already, speed warning signs which light up if you are exceeding the speed limit.
Bad idea!
I'm sorry to say that I think this is a bad idea. It has good intentions, however the world has far too much advertising already. I don't understand why we are not willing to pay for the services we use (individually and socially).
Meditation is indispensable
One only has to read books such as "Meditation and Its Practice" by Swami Rama to understand that there is something very special about true meditation. It's not simply a physical exercise, and does not require religious dogma. All MUST practice it!
It has to happen one day
I agree with bomohwkl that money is the curse of human society. Let me ask everyone this: do happy people really work for money? With the proper governmental involvement and education, money can be dispensed with without any societal collapse.
It has to happen one day
Do we really need money to live? No. Do certain bosses and politicians who control our lives (while it must be vice versa) need money to pull their ticks until the next election? Yes, of course. So what do we choose? Them crushing hardworking people?
Re:
To answer a previous comment, a factory worker in a system without money will work overtime if needed, because he knows that the farmer too will work overtime to produce food for him if needed. It's all really about true community.
window picture frames
could you describe the technical and cost aspect of converting to picture frames please?
How do you get anyone to use it?
There are already lots of proposals for gender neutral pronouns. The most popular one seems to be zie/zir. The trick is getting one to catch on-- most English speakers are presently extremely resistant to change. <3
What's a democracy?
Who gets to decide whether or not a country is a democracy? Lately in the US "democracy" has meant "someone who goes along with US foreign policy," & has little to do with whether there are genuine free popular elections.
Proverbs
Your idea inspired me to write a computer program on proverbs. You can search, edit etc. for proverbs, read the meanings etc.

Proverbs are fun.
laughing
There is a world laughter day,... and don't forget the laughter clubs...hohohaha

This would force schools to think how to make education interesting in order to function.

Liberation From School
http://www.school-liberation.tk
Fascinating
This idea is something that is long overdue... instant feedback to get the sense of a meeting without the time-consuming process of actually voting. Will look forward to actual applications.
hermits
A job to appeal to hermits?
encourage
Ame, i liked this article. great genes. please e-mail me at dave_doniese@juno.com
Ekpenede Ekhaguere
What about?
There already is a gender neutral third-person pronoun. It's called "they". People just are too lazy to consistently use it in singular contexts where gender should be left neutral.
But some parents do need to be forced
Loving parents don't need to be forced to raise their kids well, but some parents do, and should be. The state is useless if it can't defend the rights of innocent people. It's not up to scum bags to say otherwise.
And another thing
The idea isn't that an essay or two is going to sort out deeply seated issues, it's that what they write can be analysed (by professionals) for sypmtons of aggression, for example if they write something disturbing, just plain stupid, or smug.
How about NO religion?
What we need is more scientific reasoning, not religion which rests on belief in unsubstantiated entities. We need to believe in ourselves, not give part of our destiny to something religionists themselves admit (and preach!) is ultimately unknowable
site improvements
1. It would be useful to have a 'next' button to see succeeding contributions without having to back up.
2. A date of the contribution would also be useful.
'report my drving' sticker
Why segregate just older drivers. A sticker should be put on all cars so that reckless drivers could be reported. This is done on some company vans and lorries in UK so why not extend it to all vehicles.
Royals
Instead of the over the top hand shaking (which they must also hate) find something more productive in their duties. ie. if visiting a car plant put a signature on say 1000 car manuals to speed up sales.
certificate of competency
Is this pre or post holding office? If he does hold office and the certificate says he is competent is he unsackable when making a catastrophic bloomer.
Leaves on the track
Wind turbines could also be attached to the front of trains. In Autumn they would blow leaves off the rails just ahead of the train.

relative instead of absolute cap
How about a relative limit for wealth? Make the top limit some multiple of e.g. the median - then the richest segment would have incentives to lift overall wealth levels. What multiple - 100? 100 000? Let each society decide!
reduce appointment delays
The same system would be useful to notify patients when the doctor was running late - they could automatically receive a msg if the likely delay was more than a preset amount.
outsourcing the care ot the elderly to developing countries
it seems to me that this idea has potential, as long as the elderly are allowed to participate in this program, not forced in any way, or even blackmailed into it for the good of the state : Which could of course have terrible consequences socially.

Thank you, Ursula minor
Nutrition
I disagree. If these funds 'disapear', then in fact the best use for them is to invest them back into the quality of student nutrition. For example, nutrient enrichment has been shown to greatly increase study ability. This population is malnourished
Superb!
If it works as said, this is exactly the kind solution we need. There are others not yet dreamed of.
law
I like this idea, but I feel to make it work, the government should literally outlaw any price that is short of a whole number by 1-2 units. At the same time, it requires that all transactions result in that 1 unit going into a social, charitable pot
supplements
actually this is feasible. But my interest is in the effects of added nutrients on the addictiveness of a drug - that anti-holic alcoholic beverage may be possible -
co-author with me?
you have a two-dimensional concept of gangs
Um, I guess this might work if gangs were just for fun?!? But gangs don't fight to see who's "best" (although that may be a secondary motive), they fight over serious territorial issues. If you want to get rid of gangs, legalize the things they deal.
people would start noticing the bad driving habits of exes, etc...
Please, everyone, please consider the possibility of corruption when you think of your ideas. We're looking for ideas that can deal with the dirt of the real world, right? A number you can call to delete someone's license doesn't pass that test, IMHO
The MenuPad
Why not take this one step further and have the table at which diners are sat become the interactive menu screen? Touch sensitive, allowing realtime screening of menus, dishes' descriptions, pronunciation guides, everything. All this would need would be some software written to tie it in to the kitchen, check on the ratings and tasting notes of all the wines in the restaurant's cellars, order a cab home... the applications are almost endless! And, children and others could be entertained, amused and informed by the eTable while the rest of the party is awaiting the food.
Electronic Book
This will eventually be available in colour, similar to the 'graphics tablets' already on the market. Battery life may be a concern, as well as weight and friability of the pages. Still, a positive thumbs up!
