The Problem:
Increasing contributions to distributed computing projects
The Social Invention:
Distributed computing projects utilise the spare processing power of a pc, via a free piece of software, that works on a small part of a larger problem. They usually work in the background without the user even noticing any difference to the performance of the pc. The results are combined with thousands of other computers around the world to solve challenges that a single super computer could not achieve in a reasonable time span.
Perhaps in places where computers are left on for much of the day eg. internet cafes for instance or those publicly sited courtesy internet booths, these computers could be working on distributed computing projects in the background. This would put to good use the time in which the pc is potentially left idle and would thus contribute so much to projects that benefit worthwhile causes. Arguably the most well known of the distributed computing projects is SETI, but for a comprehensive list of others visit here http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html.
