The Problem:
we are trying to improve sustainable transport in Rome, Italy, where car predominance is a plague. we recycle more than 1000 bikes a year, and provide free technical and logistic help to lower class people in crowded suburbs of Rome. we promote communication on traffic problems and pollution in our city. we deliver bicycles and their revolutionnary perspective of urban transport.
The Social Invention:
The bike workshop called "ciclofficina" in Rome has been operative for three years now, living out of its own collective work. no profit made, fundraising is provided by social dinners, concerts, and public donations. basically the bike workshop delivers more than 1000 recycled bicycles every year, and helps people fix more than 10.000 bicycles.
It also organizes meetings and conferences on pollution in Rome, and takes care of a great project called "middle bikes", a free distribution of bicycles in Konakry, Guinea, forming a new self organized bike workshop over there. these bikes come from our workshop's depot, furbished by people of Rome. we do not receive any help from local government, unfortunately. no one here is interested in sustainable development, and our work is getting more and more difficult, due to lack of funds, and people willing to work with us.
the bike workshop is open every day, from early afternoon to nightime.
our website is Ciclofficina (in italian).
