The Problem:
The six-day week:
- creates more time for people and their families without changing anyone's financial situation;
- helps reduce pollution;
- helps boost the economy.
The Social Invention:
This is a calendar of 2006 [Ed. Formatting didn't come through..but you can imagine]. The one difference is that Thursday has been omitted.
Instead of 52 weeks/year, there are 61 weeks/year.
Instead of 4 weeks/month, there are 5 weeks/month.
Instead of 7 days/week, there are 6 days/week.
No one's financial situation changes, as instead of a 7.5 hour workday, there is an 8 hour workday.
(7-day week) 52 weeks x 37.5 hrs. = 1950 hrs./ year
(6-day week) 61 weeks x 32 hrs. = 1952 hrs./ year (a difference of 2 hrs./yr.)
This creates a 4-day workweek.
This creates 16 extra weekend days per year.
(7-day week) 365 day year = 260 workdays + 105 weekend days. (A ratio of 2.5 workdays/ day off.)
(6-day week) 365 day year = 244 workdays + 121 weekend days. (A ratio of 2 workdays/ day off.)
What is the point of this?
It reduces pollution by turning 16 days/year of rush hour traffic into weekend traffic.
It creates 16 additional weekend days/year for individuals and families.
It boosts the economy by 16 weekend days/year.
