The Problem:
Encourage people to look at related ideas
Encourage collaboration
Makes it easier to surf GIB
Makes review process easier
The Social Invention:
There could be a section for each idea devoted to hyperlinks to other GIB related ideas.
This makes it easier for people to look at related ideas.
It encourages people to collaborate more as they can compare variations of a theme.
It makes it easier to surf GlobalIdeasBank. You can surf to similar ideas. You start out with one idea, then surf to a related idea. Then that related idea has other related ideas that you can surf to. So you could conceivably spend hours surfing this way :) , similar to the way some people surf the internet. This method of surfing I call horizontal surfing as compared to vertical surfing. In horizontal surfing you do not have to go back to your starting point to continue surfing. In 'vertical surfing' you would go back to your starting point/directory/list time and again to keep finding new sites.
It encourages people when they are submitting an idea to look to see if there idea has been submitted before. This makes it easier for GIB reviewers who have to check if an idea has been previously submitted. This process is similar to what you have to do when submitting a patent where you have to check to see if your patent has precedents.
Hyoerlinking to related ideas creates a network, a web of ideas on GIB. A web is very powerful. It is a horizontal organization of information. It complements the more hieriachical/vertical nature of lists of best ideas, most read ideas, most recent ideas etc
The section that has related ideas links currently on GIB is similar to this idea. At the moment this related ideas section chooses the most highly rated ideas from that section as being related. However it doen't really allow for horizontal surfing in the current format though because you have the same top 5 related ideas when you click to a related idea.
Once there was a hyperlink section, there could be a subculture of GIB readers consisting of people who really enjoy looking at how ideas are interelated. They might really have fun going around and hyperlinking up related ideas.
Subject: hyperlinks and traffic
Hyperlinks create a natural and organic way for better ideas to get more traffic, because the better ideas will get more links to them.
In the current GIB system, some of the better ideas may be read less often than their quality predicates.

Subject: neural net
I like the idea of seeing it as a neural net. The way all the ideas are linked is similar to how all the neurons link together in the brain. Link the neurons or ideas in a different way and you have different global perceptions of reality.

Subject: organization organization
i was just reminded of a neural net.. it would be difficult to put an idea into a folder, but hyperlinking is great.. but could we do it graphically like windows explorer instaid of just a bunch of hyperlinks?

Subject: determining most important ideas
add number of votes along with the vote score.. AND/OR .. implement an ebay style vote system
it would be great to see links to other similar ideas at the bottom of the page, and find out which are the best at the same time.

Subject: determining most important ideas
Hyperlinking ideas also gives you a new way of determining which is the most important ideas. For the more links there are to an idea, the better it probably is. (Google uses this "no. of sites linked to" method to rank its search items)
