The Problem:
The war-like nature of the world, and of politics
The Social Invention:
A mayor of a Belgian town has set up a specific department to encourage the residents of his town to be more friendly to each other. The so-called Department of Tenderness has been set up in Kruibeke in Belgium by Antoine Denert, who has decided to make it his personal responsibility to increase the level of niceness and sensitivity in the area under his aegis. Mayor Denert believes that fostering tenderness and even cuddling will help decrease the number of conflicts on an individual and local level.
The mayor said at the launch of the new department that he “will set an example and start in my own village by caressing, cuddling and kissing as many people as possible”. This might be a little much for all politicians to take on, but the general concept of such a devoted department is perhaps one worth considering at all levels. Certainly Mayor Denert thinks so, and is encouraging national and international bodies to follow his lead: “Why not change the Ministry of Defence into the Ministry of Tenderness? The war in Iraq would never have started”.
