Because the homeless have no place to save and store their personal documents and information, a French homelessness charity is setting up a day centre to allow homeless to create web sites and free email accounts. This creation can also help aid them in education, keeping in touch with family and friends, and searching for jobs. It can also be a good step toward getting people off the streets, giving the homeless hope, and keeping them better informed.
Emmaus, located in Paris, helps near 500 homeless a day. They have recently set up nine new PCs, donated by Microsoft Corp., and have volunteers who assist the homeless set up accounts online. "For people who live on the streets and who get their things stolen all the time, this allows them to create a protected space," Emmaus spokeswoman Helene Thouluc said. Due to its popularity, the charity also plans to open four more Internet centres in 2004.
