Master level students dedicate between 4-12 months to their thesis research. The choice of topic is usually up to the student who bases it on his/her field of interest or their interpretation of the need for such a research. Often, these interpretations are wrong and the work done by the student goes unread to the university library.
In the same time, social or environmental organizations are unable to conduct research for their needs due to lack of funds or lack of professional knowledge (mainly in developing countries).
One can immediately understand, therefore, that there is a big potential to create a win-win situation in which students will be involved with research on current, real world issues and their work could be used by the organizations on the field, to better deal with the issues at hand.
It may be important to note that more than one student can be working on a topic – there can be several students from different countries working on multiple aspects of a problem, each within his/her field of expertise, and the cooperation between them can lead not only for better understanding of the problem by each of them, but also for a possibly better solution incorporating different perspectives from different areas of the world.
In practical terms, the idea is to create a research coordinating database, that will accept research needs from national or international organizations (like NGOs or UN bodies) and will be searchable by students from all over the world. The organizations using this service will get master level research for their needs, practically at no cost.
In order to implement the idea all that is needed is to create a database and inform universities and various organizations about it. The costs are negligible and it can be implemented in a very short time.
