A video rental shop in Bayswater in London has introduced a ‘movie mediator’ to prevent couples rowing over which film (or type of film) to take home. Blockbuster commissioned a relationship psychologist, Elaine Spurr, to research the issue, and she discovered that almost half of all renters could not agree on a film to hire when part of a couple or group. She also discovered that women, though using flirting techniques to get what they want, were more flexible and accommodating in the video negotiation process, while men simply tend to resort to sulking.
‘Men and women employ different tatics to get their choice of movie’
The mediators will offer tips and advice on the shop floor to try and prevent the, often gender-based, battles. Dr Spurr says that conflict can arise because “men and women employ different tactics to get their choice of movie ...These tactics reflect the gender divide in tyipcal styles of communication”. The mediator scheme could help calm these conflicts a little, by recommending films that both can enjoy and through outlining the benefits of flexibility and compromise. If the scheme is successful in Bayswater, there will be further trials in Birmingham, Bristol, London and Manchester.
