People everywhere seem to be obsessed with fame; furthermore, playing the lottery is extremely popular, especially in the U.S. So why not combine the two? It could be a regional, national or even international lottery, preferably run by a nonprofit organization, with a set percentage of the proceeds supporting their charitable work. People would buy the lottery tickets in the hope of winning the opportunity to be the temporary spokesperson of the organization running the lottery. This would consist of being the star of the lottery’s printed media, Internet, television and radio publicity campaigns.
The winning ticket could perhaps be drawn once a month with the winner then enjoying a full month in the limelight. A nonprofit organization receives discounted rates on advertising and airtime but the scope and magnitude of each month’s publicity campaign would depend upon how many lottery tickets had been purchased during the month leading up to each prize drawing. Because this lottery would award its winners with fame rather than money, it doesn’t seem that this scheme would be too difficult for a nonprofit organization to implement. The lottery would simply be a fundraising activity. Perhaps an independent accounting firm would need to be hired to satisfy some governmental bureaucracy. Nonetheless, the Fame Lottery could potentially raise enormous funds for a nonprofit organization while tickling the ego-fancy of millions.
