Most journalists can be relied on to give a reasonably fair account of events and projects and to behave ethically. It is however perhaps worth sharing a record of those journalists who fail to maintain these basic standards. Here, to get such a list going, is my contribution:
Charlie Skelton, a columnist, surprisingly, for the London Guardian, should be avoided like the plague. He peddles in print facetiously violent, murderous and offensive fantasies and in my view is fit for employment only by some Nazi or National Front publication.
In my 30 years of experience of dealing with journalists, he is the first one I have felt the need to warn people about in this way.
I suggest that this Media Watch remains decentralised -- that if a journalist behaves improperly to you or to your project, you put up your own Media Watch web page on your own web site. In due course, search engines will pick up the name of the journalist and this will act as a warning to the public and to that journalist's potential future employers - and may help to uphold standards in future.
It also gives the Davids of this world a chance to defend themselves against the media Goliaths.
