In the USA, the introduction of pets into a couple of state prisons has proved to be a remarkably successful venture. The most noteworthy is the scheme set up at the Purdy Treatment Centre for Women, Gig Harbour, Washington. It was established with the help of Kathy Quinn, now Sister Pauline (e-mail sisterop@ime.net), who is promoting this idea at other correctional institutions, and the object is for inmates to train dogs to aid disabled people. Warders and governors were wary at first, but the scheme has been successful in every way. The self-esteem of prisoners has increased dramatically and they now feel that they have a link with the outside world, as well as being able to do something worthwhile with their time. Many of those involved go on to work with animals on leaving the prison, and the relationships between inmates and staff have improved greatly.

Subject: Animal shelter?
Perhaps a more basic objective of creating a no-kill animal shelter would be more widely accepted. Much private funding is available. It is not slave labor for prisoners to do what free people volunteer to do. Natural interaction = rehabilitative...

Subject: not a global ideal
It steals jobs from honest people to proving cheap labour for prisons that make a cut of the pay of any inmate and pay them next to nothing as slave labour. It is evil as prisons are evil and helps nothing but give false hope of being a dog trainer.

Great idea. In fact today a person was disabled by a dog (Bites) during a robbery and is sure to go to prison. He could train the dog and use it when released.
