: When he signed in 1999 my treasured copy of the library edition of his Directory of Alternatives, published in 1973, the well of ideas Nicholas had tended for 26 years seemed to stretch into eternity. Through him, as with his fellow visionaries, men like Aldous Huxley and Alan Watts, I felt in touch with the sanity of the race, and it was great solace. I believe he had many books to write, much leadership to offer in the future he worked for, much recognition to come, and it is a sad loss. Only in the sharp reminder of my own mortality that his death brought do I find meaning.
