15,000mg of morphine per day

Summarised from a letter by John Stephens of Enfield in the Voluntary Euthanasia Society Newsletter (May 1998).

'Hospice consultants allow doses of 15,000mg (or more) of morphine per day, whereas the limit for doctors in general is about 900mg'

Hospice consultants allow doses of 15,000mg (or more) of morphine per day, whereas the limit for doctors in general is about 900mg.

Perhaps this explains why clergy and carers who visit hospices see terminal cases peacefully sedated and maintain that it is almost always possible to take pain away, whereas outside this scene a very different picture is found, where patients suffer pain for years and possibly a lingering and undignified death.
