Unless otherwise stated, you can assume that all the cemeteries and crematoria listed are prepared to deal with families not using funeral directors. Abbreviations in bold are as follows:
Cem = Cemetery
Crem = Crematorium
***= Winner of a New Natural Death Handbook Award 2000.
Those crematoria listed as willing to take home-made coffins do so on condition that such coffins meet the anti-pollution requirements of the Federation of British Cremation Authorities, as set out in Chapter 4. Shrouds, if listed as acceptable by either crematoria or cemeteries, are normally required to be made rigid with a plank; likewise body bags, which would also normally need to be covered with a drape of some kind. These institutions do not want to cause offence to staff or to other members of the public.
Listings are by region, and then by town within the region, except in the
Greater London region, which has been further subdivided into areas. Please

with your experience of using your local crematorium or cemetery, whether
positive or negative, and including as much detail as possible; please add
if you are nominating them for a future award. Our listings are otherwise
based on information given to us by the services themselves - the name of
the informant is given wherever possible.

Grounds: 'Four different zones ensure that the different needs and beliefs of individuals do not intrude upon others: The Peace Garden is bedded out and highly-maintained providing the principal view from the Hall of Remembrance; the monthly gardens are planted to a seasonal pattern; the woods are for those who prefer a return to nature and may oppose high maintenance regimes; and the memorial wall offers the only cremation memorial option.' 'The service has adopted with the Charter for the Bereaved, offering both traditional and environmental options. The environmental options also prove far less expensive, offering savings against the cremation fee, and the provision of biodegradable coffins. Our attitude is one of complete openness, giving the bereaved complete access to the information they need in order to obtain a meaningful funeral.
