Messages written on papier maché coffins

Pamela Gray

Adapted extract from a letter to the Natural Death Centre from Australia.

I have set up a very small paper recycling business in the village I live in, South of Sydney. This has led me to an interest in making beautiful and environmentally-sound coffins from waste paper (and in promoting healthier deaths for those that want them).

A neighbour got some information about your Natural Death Centre from the Internet for me.

'Everyone could write messages on the coffin, like they do on plaster over broken bones'

I like the idea of the coffin being a functional, everyday item, like a bookcase, coffee table or blanket box. If I can do papier maché coffins, and stay within Australian health regulations, people could decorate or put the final touches onto their coffin, or everyone could write messages, like they do on plaster over broken bones. Or have pages from their favourite magazine or their life issue articles plastered all over the coffin.
