The Association for Natural Burial Grounds knows of 33 green burial grounds open as of July '96, with 6 more about to open and more than 30 at the planning stage (although for the current situation on this see the lastest woodland burial sites list) A bishop has said off the record that he expects almost all Christian funerals to be green burials by the year 2020.
A green burial is one where often a tree is planted instead of having a headstone. A green burial ground that wants to become a member of the Association must agree to:
- allow families to conduct the funeral themselves if they so wish, without
using a funeral director, including helping fill the grave;
- to manage their site ecologically;
- to allow burial in a shroud or cardboard coffin;
- to meet a number of other criteria designed the protect the public.
The six most recent woodland burial grounds to come to the notice of the Association are in :
- Gerrards Cross:, - Oxford: - Hillingdon: - St Asaph, - [*] Nr. Manchester. - Seaton, Devon: - Maldon, Essex:
