Adapted extract from the American magazine Tattoo, monitored for The Natural Death Centre by Roger Knights.
On his 65th birthday, a physician with more than 40 years clinical experience in emergency medicine and general surgery had a tattoo symbolising 'Do not defibrillate or cardiovert' placed on his left chest, This tattoo (25mm in diameter) was copied from a picture prepared by a medical illustrator, and was positioned lateral to his areola. The tattooed symbol was used because it is an international form of communication not requiring words.
Likewise, an experienced and practising emergency nurse had 'DNR' ('Do Not Resuscitate') tattooed in the pericardinal area.
