Paid leave for workers to tend the dying

Summarised from an item in The Times (London, UK, June 3rd 1999) by Alexandra Frean.

'People who are forced to take a career break to look after a dying relative should receive an end-of-life benefit that would be similar to maternity leave'

Irene Higginson, the Professor of Palliative Care and Policy at King's College Hospital, London, argues that people who are forced to take a career break to look after a dying relative should receive an 'end-of-life' benefit that would be similar to maternity leave.

'2.8 million working people already try to act as carers for elderly relatives'

Approximately 2.8 million working people already try to act as carers for elderly relatives, with these numbers set to rise steeply as life expectancy increases.

Professor Higginson has also called for a public education campaign about death to help people to face up to their own mortality and to cope with bereavement.
